A research group from Incheon National University (South Korea) has created a fairly simple processor based on DNA molecules. Engineers are convinced that such chips will be able to fully compete and even replace traditional silicon processors in the near future.

So engineers actively experimented with DNA, implementing capacious solutions for storing information on their basis. However, despite the obvious progress, in the previously created models there were obvious problems with the speed of reading as well as writing data.

These difficulties were primarily due to the fact that storing information in DNA works according to a special principle and requires completely new approaches to working with an array of data.

So in the course of the next study, scientists came to the conclusion that the solution to the problem may be a processor implemented on DNA molecules, working on the same principle as DNA storage devices.

This is exactly what the Korean scientists managed to realize. So, according to the published data of The Register, Korean engineers managed to create a device implemented in the form of a chip, which was called the Microfluidic Processing Unit (MPU).

So the MPU created by the engineers turned out to be able to quite successfully implement the simplest basic operations like AND, OR, XOR, and also NOT, which are inherently quite simple, but despite the simplicity, the very possibility of such calculations is a huge step forward.

Before this historical event, engineers had to perform a whole a complex of complex preparatory work in manual mode, while all this happened in reactionary test tubes.

Today, the MPU processor is already capable of performing such calculations in an automatic mode, using a 3D printer for these purposes. This fact greatly reduces the initial complexity and takes scientists one step closer to creating a real-world DNA processor.

So the engineers carried out control from a personal computer, although it was also possible to carry out control through a smartphone. This fact means that scientists still need an external tool to actively manage processes.

But as scientists suggest, they are actively working to implement solutions based on complete DNA, with DNA algorithms, as well as storage systems made on DNA.

Once all of this is done, complex DNA-based computer systems will become commonplace in our world.
