Moss on the roof of the house: what is the threat, how to clean it? In the west, they came up with a special method and forever forgot about the moss on the roof

Roof moss may look nice, but it destroys the material of the roof. Moisture can get inside small cracks, as a result of which insulation and other elements of the roof suffer.

In addition, the vegetation retains moisture and this has a negative impact (leakage) on the roof. Dust and leaves linger on the roof, moss grows, insects appear.

Moss grows on any roof that has a rough surface. It can be slate, soft tiles, metal tiles, roll roofing materials.

Roof cleaning

It can be mechanically cleaned with a brush. First, the roof is watered with a hose. Then brush off the moss on the roof with a brush. However, this process is very long and can damage the roof covering.

A pressure washer is also not recommended. The powerful flow of water will ruin the soft tiles. This kind of washing partially destroys even concrete. Rigid roofing can handle this cleaning, but shingles will not.

1. There are special antiseptics for the roof. For example, these products are manufactured by Technicol. The tool prevents lichen and moss from growing on the roof. However, there is a drawback: antiseptics can change the color of the coating. The agent is sprayed onto the surface or rolled with a roller, moistened with a sponge.

2. Copper sulfate - a more accessible and inexpensive roof cleaner. Vitriol is combined with soda (1: 1) and diluted with water. The proportions are approximately as follows: for a bucket of water 70 gr. vitriol and soda.

3. Saline solution will help remove moss. 2 kg. combine ash with salt - 1 kg. You also need to grate household soap 2 pieces. Mix everything and pour hot water (bucket of water). Now the solution must be put on fire and when it boils, turn it off, cool and apply to the roof.

Abroad, they found a solution to the problem with a simpler method.

They do not remove moss and other vegetation from roofs. A wide mesh copper tape is simply installed under the ridge element.

When precipitation occurs, water reacts with copper. It turns out a kind of antiseptic that flows down the surface of the roof and disinfects it, destroying moss, dark spots on the roof.

In our country, not many people yet know about this method. But those craftsmen who are in the know attach copper strips 5-8 cm thick along the ridge.

And they forget about this problem forever. The moss will never grow again and the roof is as good as new.
