If you want to grow a cedar and get cones, then it's time to lay nuts for stratification
Everyone knows what pine nuts are. Incredibly tasty, sweet, healing nuts, many of us were happy to pick out of the cones brought as a souvenir. And those who live in places where the cedar grows, even more so, imagine what it is.
Is it possible to grow a cedar
If you live in your own house, in the middle lane, then, of course, you probably had a desire to leave your children or grandchildren as a gift in the form of pine nuts obtained from your own tree. If you yourself are still young, then there is a chance to try them yourself, because the cedar begins to bear fruit in about 20-25 years.
But then your descendants will enjoy these nuts for several centuries, because this is a long-lived plant.
Better, of course, to buy cedar seedlings. But, since you need to grow about 4-5 plants to ensure fruiting, it is very expensive.
That is why it is worth trying to grow it from seeds by buying nuts in the store. But this should be done right now, in winter, because the seeds need long-term stratification - being in the cold. Otherwise they will not sprout.
Growing plan
You need to buy fresh nuts at the market or in the store. If they bring them to you from Western Siberia, then that is absolutely excellent.
1. Soak the seeds for 3 days, changing the water daily. We leave the drowned seeds, we throw away the floating ones.
2. We mix wet seeds with sand and put them in the refrigerator for 3-4 months. Keep them moist at all times.
3. In April, we wash the seeds from the sand and plant them in a garden bed, where they will stay for 3 years. Count on this by providing the seedlings with favorable conditions.
4. The planting site should be in the shade, fertilized with peat and soil from under conifers. It is in such soil that cedars will germinate and take root.
5. After the emergence of shoots, you need to treat them from fusarium with an antifungal drug. And keep moist at all times.
6. Constantly mulch the bed with moss or coniferous substrate collected from the forest.
7. 3-year-old seedlings are planted one at a time, already in a bright, but not sunny place. The care is the same - watering, mulching, treatment with an antifungal drug. We are growing them for another 3 years.
8. The main way to increase their vitality is to constantly water them with crushed mushroom water. Any mushrooms, even edible, even toadstools. The mycelium creates a symbiosis with cedar roots and increases their vitality. From this point on, you can not treat the soil with fungicides. It must be covered with a film if a sign of fungus appears on the needles and will have to be treated.
9. At 6 years old, plant cedars in a permanent place, in groups of 4-5 plants. They do not bear fruit one by one.
10. By the age of 10, the cedar should be 1.5 meters high. After that, it begins to actively grow upward and in breadth.
The first buds can be obtained after 15 years. By the age of 30, the tree can reach 9 meters in height.
If you set yourself the goal of growing a cedar, you can live a long time to wait for the fruit. Isn't it motivation?
