Will OSB get cheaper in 2022? We make a roof without OSB, plywood and underlays (the cheapest roof)
After building the frame of the house, the builders proceed to the installation of the roof. now there is a lot of choice of materials for roofing: soft tiles, slate, siding, metal tiles, etc. And what serves as a reliable base for the roof?
Many will now say that it is OSB or plywood. Previously, sheet materials were inexpensive, but now people are thinking how and with what to replace them. The disadvantage of these materials is that they are not environmentally friendly. Plywood and OSB contain harmful substances that are used in production for gluing board layers. It is inconvenient that holes must be drilled in plywood in advance in order to hammer in nails.
Both materials (OSB3 and FSF plywood) are moisture resistant. The strength index is higher for plywood. OSB board is not resistant to shock loads. But OSB is easy to cut with a simple hacksaw, and it is better to cut plywood with a band or circular saw.
How to replace plywood and OSB?
Now in Leroy OSB-3 with a thickness of 11 mm. and a size of 2500x1250 mm. costs from 1000 rubles. In addition, the quality of the roofing materials has deteriorated significantly. All this makes the simple builder look for a replacement.
It turns out that it is not at all necessary to use plywood and OSB for the roof. A roofing cake device can be budget friendly. Even vapor barrier, waterproofing is not required.
OSB and various substrates, films are increasingly questioning their mandatory use. The sellers just advertised these unnecessary materials (glued wood waste).
It is enough to remember how it was built earlier. In Russia, the roof was covered with a plank or thatch without a single nail. The roof used to be made of planks, which were boiled in oil. Everything was done by hand and took a lot of time.
Now there is an edged board "shalevka" on sale. It is then needed for the roof. It will be cheaper (saving 40%) than plywood and OSB sheets. The board is easier to lift onto the roof than OSB sheets and plywood. The roof is much stronger than with OSB.
A solid board is attached to the crate without gaps. You can even fix damp boards if the tiles are soft. Such a roof is not afraid of small movements that occur when the board dries out.
There is also such a moment: so that the board "does not lead", do the installation with the rings down and the distance between the rafters is 590-600 mm.
There will still be small gaps between the boards (after the wood dries out), but this is not bad. There will be good breathability. 5 mm. perfectly acceptable between the boards.
