Everyone is looking for a "dew point", although in fact you need to build without taking it into account

I liked the phrase: "finding the dew point is like looking for cockroaches on the moon." And I completely agree with her.

Dew point is a term primarily from physics. However, it has long been moved to construction. And yes, you need to take it into account when carrying out construction work. Otherwise, the building may be in operation for a very short time. But it makes no sense to calculate and look for the "dew point". You need to build in a different way.

Everyone is looking for a " dew point", although in fact you need to build without taking it into account

Any construction process is based on calculations and calculations, which is very often forgotten by many modern builders. The reasons for this phenomenon are quite commonplace - I want to reduce the cost of repair and finishing work.

In the cold regions of our country, insulation plays an important role. If you do not do it, dampness and moisture will penetrate into the room, and repairs will need to be done much more often. However, proper insulation of a room is a serious task, which is based on certain calculations.

Unfortunately, many careless architects simply download projects from the Internet without bothering to "put them on the ground." As a result, even expensive insulation does not justify itself - it simply does not cope with the tasks that need to be solved in a specific project.

This is where the dew point comes in. In fact, it represents the extreme temperature limit at which water vapor begins to transform into water. Based on this indicator, a further calculation of insulation is underway.

For example, a building is constructed from a porous material. It can be aerated concrete or cinder block. In good weather, steam freely passes through the walls and moisture does not linger inside. However, when cold weather sets in, condensation falls on the wall. This phenomenon provokes not only visual problems, but also technological ones.

When exposed to low temperatures, water crystallizes and can destroy walls. After a few years, cracks will appear, and after that the structure will simply collapse.

That is why a number of requirements are put forward for insulation:

  • the presence of ventilation holes to avoid the formation of mildew and mold;
  • Breathable structure;
  • individual approach to calculations;
  • selection of a suitable insulation option.

The insulation system is quite complex. And even it does not allow to avoid the appearance of the "dew point", because all the necessary calculations should be done by professional designers. And naturally, nobody does this. All figured out "by eye".

Of course, you can do it easier - neglect all the rules of insulation and choose for yourself a house with high-quality and dense walls that do not need insulation. This is good, but not always feasible.

Our self-builders have chosen their own path. They are not looking for the dew point. They don't bother with house insulation. They simply keep indoor steam away from the walls until the dew point. Houses are built from materials that do not need insulation - aerated concrete blocks, cinder blocks, foam concrete, wood concrete, etc., and the walls are insulated from the inside. And these houses have been warm and cozy for decades.

So the search for the "dew point" is a thankless task. Either you entrust this to professionals and pay a decent amount of money, or just think about how people live in non-insulated houses? And don't put too much emphasis on insulation. The wall should be built so that there is no need to look for any "dew point" in it. The wall itself should serve as the best insulation for the home.
