We continue to talk about how the finishing work in our house is going. We have been living in it for almost two years, but on the 1st floor, one room and a hallway have not yet been put into proper form.

New doors were recently installed on the 1st floor so that the kitchen and bathroom can be isolated from those areas where the decoration will continue. And when buying doors, the question arose of which door hinges to use

A little background

On the second floor we have three bedrooms and a bathroom. We bought doors for them during last year's lockdown, when we were at home. We chose it via the Internet, in a large store, with delivery. I must say right away that these were cheap purchases. We saw no point in hanging expensive doors in the private area. And they were afraid to buy a pig in a poke for a lot of money. Their husband installed them with the help of his brother-in-law, on his own. Hinges were also ordered from the store on the advice of the manager, those that are easiest to install yourself. Since they did not know what to choose, they completely relied on his advice. And, thank you, the store employee, did not regret buying. These turned out to be butterfly hinges, which do not cut in, but are superimposed on the canvas and the box.

Second doors

But the second doors are more expensive, no longer a budget option, because they are on the first floor, in plain sight, where the traffic is higher. And the loops were chosen for us by the master who was supposed to install these canvases. The husband himself did not dare to experiment, and there was no time, as he worked.

We thought that the loops would also be "butterfly", but the master chose those that he considers to be of better quality. When I asked why he decided so, he said that "butterflies" are good for light doors, but we have heavy ones, so it's better to make other mortise hinges.

Pros and cons of "butterflies"

When, after a while, my sister's husband, who is engaged in the installation of doors, visited us, we decided to ask him about the hinges. He is constantly busy at work, so he could not come to us. Like any master, I found a lot of shortcomings in the work of my fellow craftsmen. It goes without saying, we expected such a reaction, so we agreed in advance not to be upset.

Here's what he said:

1. The quality of butterfly and mortise hinges does not differ, the metal is the same. The wear period of the mortise is slightly shorter.

2. When changing the hinges, the butterfly is easy to change, but it can be difficult to find a mortise of the same size.

3. Mortise hinges are good for thick heavy doors, but it makes no sense to put them on thin ones.

4. The price of the "butterfly" is 100 rubles, and the mortise is 200 rubles.

5. By the time of installation - 5 minutes "butterfly" and 20 minutes - mortise.

6. Installation of a door with a mortise hinge - 500 rubles more than with a "butterfly".

So consider for yourself what is best for you.

I found only one drawback in the "butterflies" - dust settles on them, which you do not always find on time. After all, it protrudes above the surface of the canvas.

In general, I like the loops on the 2nd floor more, they are somehow prettier. Although no one, by and large, pays attention to them, except for the masters. And, therefore, you need to calculate the costs and decide for yourself, first of all, in terms of money.
