Volvo prepares to launch all-electric serial construction equipment
Volvo engineers have been piloting all-battery-powered construction equipment in Southern California over the past year.
And at the moment, the company has demonstrated commercial samples of such vehicles. At the same time, the industrial production of all-electric special equipment will start as early as 2022.
Electrical special equipment and first results
So Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE), which is controlled by the parent company of the Volvo Group,
demonstrated a fully working electric excavator Volvo CE ECR25 Electric.
So, according to published data, after tests performed at various construction sites in the state, a battery with a capacity of 20 kWh. Enough for a maximum of 4 hours of battery life.
At the same time, this battery is charged to a charge level of 80% in just 50 minutes. The engineers also found that the all-electric excavator was 9 dB quieter than its diesel counterpart, and its noise level was only 84 dB.
Also, the installed battery was enough for a maximum of 200 discharge / charge cycles. At the same time, as noted by representatives of the company, the electric version has the same characteristics as the diesel version. A clear advantage of the electric version is ease of maintenance.
Several versions of all-electric special vehicles are already available for customers in North America. And representatives of Volvo CE reported that its shipment will begin in the first half of 2022.
At the same time, the company's engineers report that work is underway to improve the charging system and improve the technical characteristics of the battery.
Well, not only passenger cars will become fully electric in the future, but also specialized construction equipment. But how this transition will actually take place, only time will tell, and almost everything will depend on the final cost of electric transport.
