Today I’ll tell you about a recent acquisition - a metalwork hammer with a round head and a wedge-shaped nose. Actually, I have a hammer with a nail puller, which is designed for carpentry and furniture repair. The locksmith's hammer has slightly different tasks, although it is also convenient for them to hammer nails.

I no longer suffer with a hammer! I learned a simple trick: how to “tightly” fix the hammer head on the handle in 5 minutes

Firstly, this hammer has a spout that is convenient to work with thin metal and other materials. For example, split a brick or gypsum block into half. Secondly, where an accurate strong blow is needed, the nose can be pointed at the object, and the striker can be hit with a sledgehammer. So I once had to dismantle an old wheel, the tire of which had burnt to the disk over the years of operation. Therefore, a hammer of this shape should be available to everyone in the garage, who at least occasionally repairs equipment.

Now about the disadvantages of the hammer

First of all, I am not satisfied with the wooden handle that constantly pops out of the head. Although the handle itself is made of hardwood and there are no complaints about it. As I said, I sometimes used a hammer as a hand chisel for splitting hard objects. Therefore, the handle in the head was subjected to strong blows, compacted and dangled in the socket. After that, you can’t use the tool, since the head, with a strong swing, flew off the handle and flew away somewhere, it’s good that it’s not on the head. You can, of course, constantly keep the hammer in the water so that the tree swells and holds tightly in the nest. But this way it will quickly rot, and the hammer will again have to be repaired.

What to think of, how to fix the hammer head

To find the answer to the problem, I had to explore the Internet, where they offered:

Weld a metal tube to the head;

wrap the end with rubber;

· fasten the locking pad from the end of the handle.

All these ideas have the right to be applied, but something did not inspire me. And the solution to the problem was born as if spontaneously. For these purposes, we needed:

electric drill, you can use a screwdriver;

drill 3 or 5 mm;

self-tapping screw according to the size of the hole.

And the time to work is a few minutes.

So, we prepare the end of the hammer handle for an exact fit into the nest. We fill the head on the prepared end of the handle, wedged the end with a steel wedge.

After we take a drill for metal, we fix it in the chuck of an electric drill.

Note. Although the hammer head is made of malleable carbon steel, the drilling site must first be marked with a center punch.

We put the hammer on the workbench and drill a hole through. If the length of the drill is not enough, then so as to drill the opposite wall at least 1 or 2 mm.

You can check the depth of the hole with a long nail or pin.

After that, we select a self-tapping screw under the hole in the hammer, it can be with a blunt or broken end, the main thing is that it must pierce the handle through and rest against the metal.

Question. Why a self-tapping screw and not a nail or pin?

Answer. To prevent fasteners from popping out on impact.

Next, we screw in the self-tapping screw and consider the work done. Now the hammer head will sit on the handle like a glove, and in just five minutes of wasted time.
