Noise from forced ventilation is a major problem for many. How I got rid of it, randomly (but I understood the essence).

No matter how perfect the ventilation system does its job, there is one thing that can negate all the benefits. It is the noise from ventilation that becomes one of the main reasons for the rejection of forced systems. But it's actually not that bad...

Noise from forced ventilation is a major problem for many. How I got rid of it, randomly (but I understood the essence).

Friends, hello to all. Commissioning, and the first experience of using my homemade ventilation system, gives various results.

  • On the one hand, this is a reason to rejoice at the positive results.
  • On the other hand, an occasion to make some adjustments and remove shortcomings.
First assembled, then disassembled...
First assembled, then disassembled...

And on top of that, there is room for accidental discoveries.

Initially, I planned to supply my ventilation system with several low-power duct fans.

Three duct fans (100 m³/h) for supply and exhaust. Each on a separate branch.

But when I decided to check how everything works in practice, and put only one pair (supply air extract), he was unpleasantly surprised.

Fans, although weak, still give their noise (

37 dB each, while not all fans were standing). And the biggest disadvantage is that the sounds are distributed through all channels. Therefore, it makes no sense to isolate noise sources from outside, all the same, all sound will be heard from the supply and exhaust outlets.

In addition, this power was not enough, so these fans had to be abandoned anyway in favor of more powerful specimens.

But the question with the noise remained in my head ...

  • After all, it was clear that a constant, monotonous hum would create great discomfort in the house.
  • At the same time, I understood that more powerful fans would make even more noise. So hope for a miracle is unlikely.
I have already started looking for different solutions. The only effective technology is the duct silencer.
(Although the stray is not complicated, it still needs some costs, or home-made solutions).

And yet the stars themselves aligned in my favor ...

I put fans on the edges of the ventilation ducts. One is generally outside the house (supply), the other (on the hood), was installed under the attic slope, and was well soundproofed. Thus, external noises were minimized.

❗❗❗ But what to do with the hum that is transmitted through the channels, I have not thought yet...

And rarely this happens, the problem just disappeared by itself. When I turned on the system, there was simply no noise at the supply and exhaust outlets (only small, from the very air).

And of course, these were not miracles, but another advantage of my recuperator.

The heat exchanger, the body of which is made of XPS, together with the filter housings (made from the same), in addition to their direct duties, perfectly perform the function of a silencer. After all, any insulation = sound insulation (something more, something less).

And ready-made, factory mufflers are based on this principle. It's simple - the sound is damped against the noise-absorbing walls.

And since my fans are already behind the recovery system, their noise simply has no chance to get through all this soundproofing.

So, a serious problem disappeared without appearing ...
