Cabbage will grow large: how I plant, what I process from pests
I planted cabbage seedlings in separate containers in April, it grew in my greenhouse. In the third decade of May, it's time to plant it in open ground in pre-prepared holes.
Place to grow and the best predecessors
A place for cabbage should be chosen sunny, well-lit. If you grow a vegetable in partial shade, then the heads of cabbage will be tied for a long time, or they may not start at all. Cabbage grows well after peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and melons.
Soil preparation
I have been preparing a bed for cabbage since autumn. I bring in compost, humus for digging. And in the spring, already in the holes, I add dolomite flour to deoxidize the soil. a tablespoon of chicken manure, a tablespoon of wood ash.
It is imperative to deoxidize the soil for cabbage, otherwise it will grow worse. Also, in acidic soil, a disease such as keel can develop.
Landing
The distance between plants should be at least 50 cm, both in a row and between rows (I mean mid-ripening and late-ripening varieties, the planting pattern of early varieties is 30 by 40 cm). Before planting, filled wells must be mixed well with a spatula and spilled with water (approximately 3 liters per well).
In each hole you need to make a small hole and plant seedlings. Before planting, I remove the cotyledon leaves from the cabbage. In this case, the growth point cannot be deepened. After planting the seedlings, I water the hole again and mulch with compost or earth. This watering is enough for about 5-7 days.
How to protect young cabbage plants from pests
For the first time, you can cover the plants with agrofiber under the arcs to protect the plantings from direct sunlight and pests. A week later, I water the cabbage with water with the addition of 2 tbsp to the watering can. spoons of ammonia. It will serve as a nitrogen supplement and will scare away slugs and cruciferous flea. After watering, I sprinkle cabbage with ash mixed with tobacco dust through a sieve. This will also protect against pests, since the tender leaves of young cabbage are very popular with insect pests. Instead of tobacco dust, you can use ground black pepper. I process cabbage like this every 7 days, and no pests are afraid of it.
You can use birch tar for protection. It will take 1 tbsp. a spoonful of the substance in 5 liters of water. The resulting solution should be sprayed with cabbage from a spray bottle. You need to repeat the treatment every 3-5 days if you want to do without chemistry.
Good luck with your planting and a rich harvest of cabbage!
