In the summer, water appeared on the windowsill: what needs to be repaired without waiting for winter
I heard drops falling one by one: “drip-drip-drip”. At first I thought it was somewhere outside (it was raining there). He went to the window to see what was the matter, and stepped into a cold puddle. It turned out that water was dripping from the window sill onto the floor.
The first thought — it's time to change the sealing gum. But no. The case turned out to be completely different.
I did not immediately understand what was the matter. When the rain stopped and everything dried up from the jug, he began to pour water into the place of the porch of the sash and frame. It did not give any effect - it was dry on the windowsill. At that moment, I saw a small gap in the glass.
For plastic windows, a rubber seal adjoins the double-glazed window, and for a wooden frame, the junction is sealed with silicone. Just this silicone has ceased to fulfill its function over the years. Somewhere it peeled off from the glass, somewhere from the glazing bead, but there were places where it simply lay in a groove and did not hold on to anything.
There is only one solution - to completely remove all the old sealant and re-silicone. At the same time, you can paint the frames. For 10 years of service, life has battered them.
Practice has shown that it is easiest to remove the old sealant in several stages. First, with a clerical knife, I simply cut through the sealant.
After that, I cleanly remove the silicone from the glass with a blade. It's not always possible to do it the first time. Sometimes you need to make 2-3 passes.
A semicircular groove was made in the frame and bead for silicone. It is impossible to completely remove the sealant from there with a blade. And the new silicone over the old does not hold well. I used a knife with a semi-circular blade, which is usually used for woodcarving.
After that, the windows were painted, and the joints of the frame and glazing beads to the double-glazed window were sealed with acetate-based silicone.
Such a sealant is suitable for outdoor use, is resistant to weather conditions and is not afraid of exposure to household chemicals.
As you can see, unlike plastic windows, wooden windows require maintenance. I think it's summer, it's time to do it. Look at the condition of your windows. Perhaps they need to be tinted and the glass joints to the frame sealed. If the article was useful, put "thumbs up" 👍 and subscribe to the channel.
