A new look for plywood: invented "wooden skin"

Italians created composite material which, having a strength of wood can bend as skin

It would seem that this material, as well as wood, long and widely known, and come up with something new is difficult to him. Nevertheless, the Italian designers Giulio Mazotti and Gianluca Lo Presti, offer insights into "well-forgotten old" from a new angle. They have developed on the basis of plywood sandwich composite material, which they called «Wood-Skin».

The material can be bent smoothly in all directions, giving the sheet the most bizarre forms.

To turn an ordinary sheet of plywood in the "wooden skin", used milling machine, computer-controlled press and special, rugged polymer network with the composite.

The material is obtained as follows. Milling machine cuts the sheet into a plurality of waterproof plywood equilateral triangles. Next, the obtained preforms are removed faces chamfer. Then the top blank "spread out" sheet laid composite and polymer mesh. Adding the second "layer" of triangles, and the resulting "sandwich" is glued under pressure.

As a result, the flexible material comes with a wide scope of application: from the production of design furniture and interior decoration to the walls, which acquire volume.

Depending on the wishes of the customer can change the angle of the layout and the degree of deformation of the sheet and its thickness.

It is also possible to produce a sheet with a scalene triangle. Thanks to this material is bent asymmetrically, allowing designers to not limit your imagination and create a semblance of wooden sculptures.

The transition is smooth (ie occurs. N. morphing effect surface), the edges merge and disappear angles.

At any time, if the layout become boring, it can be changed and put a sheet from a different angle. Moreover, furniture, tables, furnishings add up without the use of special tools or hardware. In case of need, the furniture can be dismantled and transformed it into a flat sheet that is easy to transport.

According to the designers, the scope of use of this material is not confined only to interior decoration. Triangular blank can be painted, glued on them tile impart surface texture of decorative paints and plasters and so on. D.

In addition, water-repellent plywood covering compositions and varnish, "wooden skin" can be used outdoors. For example, "dressed" in the material front of the house.

Also, the company's engineers are working on a further modification of the material. In particular, they are going to be glued to the flexible substrate triangles cut from a particularly strong and moisture resistant materials.
