Retaining wall made of old tires

Many landscape designers advise not to rush to level the site. Of course, an even rectangular piece of land is easier to improve, but if you look closely at an uneven area, you can see a number of advantages in it. The uneven terrain will make it possible to implement good solutions, such as a retaining wall. At the same time, the materials for the manufacture of a retaining wall can be different - so, today we will tell you how to make a retaining wall from old car tires.instagram post viewer

The need for a retaining wall is directly related to the slope of the site. Slope from 8 to 15 degrees it is considered a slope above average, and experts advise in this case to do terracing, the terraces are just separated by retaining walls. Terracing is done to prevent or stop the process of soil erosion, to place various buildings, structures and planting of garden crops on the terraces.

With a slope of up to 8 degrees, the slope is strengthened with ground covers and special types of shrubs.

The slope can be measured using a hydro level.

The water level is the easiest and most reliable way, and you don't have to buy a special one, even a garden hose and two plastic bottles at the ends are suitable.

So, the need for a retaining wall is obvious. How to do it, consider the example of a member of our portal Andreevev.

This site Andreevev dug under the future swimming and sunbathing area: a swimming pool, sun loungers, an umbrella from the sun, etc. are planned here. In a year after the site was dug, soil erosion began, planting thuja slowed down this process a little, but not stopped him.

Andreevev (FORUMHOUSE User):
About 15 tons of crushed stone of fraction 20-40 were used, and tires - it is necessary to count, but I still did not have enough.

Why are tires attractive as a material for retaining walls? First of all, its cheapness. Participants of FORUMHOUSE say that they can be collected for free at tire changers. And the labor intensity of the walls made of this material is lower: according to the calculations of specialists, the labor intensity of the tire retaining walls is nine times lower than that of the walls made of reinforced soil.

Before erecting a wall from used car tires, you need to think about the fact that they are hazard class 4 waste, but this stops few people.

Andreevev:
And I will lay an environmentally friendly tree on them and neutralize this danger.

Do not forget about the strength of the retaining walls made of tires: they are able to hold back significant masses of soil from slipping.

Consider the common technologies for the construction of such retaining walls.

  • Old tires are laid in columns in several rows, anchor piles are driven into the center of each column. In each row, the tires are fastened to each other with clamps. All tires are densely filled with sand, gravel or even soil.
Yriy(FORUMHOUSE member):
The tires in the row will be bolted together so that the row does not creep apart.

One side wall is cut out from the tires. The bottom row of tires is filled to the top with crushed stone, sand or soil, and some reliable sheet material is already laid on it. Further rows of tires are installed like brickwork, and all tires are packed with rubble or other material - the heavier the "filler", the more reliable the wall will be. So that the retaining wall does not move, it is fixed from the outside with anchor piles. For greater stability of the structure, all tires in the structure, both horizontally and vertically, are fastened together in any convenient and reliable way.

TsPok(FORUMHOUSE member):
If the protruding side part, which in the lying position turns out to be upper, cut off, leaving only the vertical part with the protector, and pour soil from above, not into the holes of the wheels, but as it lies - between the tires, on the tires, then over time you will get an earthen slide, the tires can completely hide.

Many people from using tires as a material for building a retaining wall are stopped by their unsightly appearance. Such a wall certainly does not decorate the site, if it does not disfigure it. But at FORUMHOUSE, successful examples of decorating such walls were given: for example, a wall of conifers was created on the outside of the wall.

Or here's a solution: to make something like an alpine slide out of a retaining wall. During construction, the walls of the tires should immediately be filled with fertile soil, then holes are made in their front side, into which flowers and vines will be planted.

Valerusha (FORUMHOUSE Member):
I will paint it brown, plant grass, and plant currants along the wall. Cheap and clean.

Another option is to lay a fine mesh-netting on top of the tire structure in three layers, cover it with good earth and sow with lawn grass.

Or here's an option in which the retaining wall is completely sewn up with wood.

Andreevev made approximately the same design for the recreation area by the pool. To level the platform, he covered it with sand, and laid logs (100x50) on top - he laid the floor and from this base he “walked” up to the thujas.

The lags were covered with an edge 100x50x3000.

The tires were covered with geotextiles, a frame was mounted on them and then "inch weaving".

Below are a few photos from the preparatory work on the preparation of boards.

This is what the nearly finished version looks like. There will be a staircase that will lead from the pool to the next level and another hearth. As we can see, a retaining wall made of tires may well be a decoration of the site and even its pride.
