Why do chickens peck on styrofoam?

click fraud protection

White foam granules scattered on the ground are very attractive to all birds: they are pecked by pigeons, sparrows and geese. But domestic chickens show the greatest interest in them.

It's no secret that styrofoam is harmful and shouldn't be allowed to be pecked by chickens. For more details on why styrofoam is harmful, I wrote in this article.

Phenol, styrene - all these harm living organisms.

Marvel at the results, this styrofoam corner of the dayate chickens:

Why do chickens need Styrofoam and why do they like it so much?

There are actually four reasons, and all of them are not encouraging:

  • lack of salt - due to a lack of salts in the body, chickens literally pounce on polystyrene, and birds really need salts to lay eggs.
  • curiosity - chickens are just very interested in what kind of white balls.
  • error - chickens take styrofoam for crumbs of lime that their body needs;
  • dependence - because of the pentane gas, the chickens cannot stop pecking on the foam granules - it is addictive.
