Why are wooden houses better preserved in the North?

click fraud protection

Have you noticed that in the Russian North (in the same Arkhangelsk region, Karelia) the preservation of wooden log cabins is an order of magnitude higher than in the south - in the Kuban, Krasnodar Territory and Crimea? If in the north there are still houses of the 19th century, then in the south such specimens can no longer be found.

I asked myself this question and conducted a small investigation, the results of which I want to share with you in this article.

Why do houses in the North last longer?

First reason seems obvious only at first glance. The fact is that in the North of Russia there is a completely different wood: it is thin-layered, and there are fewer knots on the tree trunks. The layers of this tree are dense, even and do not have a cross-layer.

Thanks to these characteristics, the tree holds the resin better, and the resin is the best natural protection against atmospheric precipitation: rain and snow.

The second reason - in people. The skill of the northerners is much higher than that of the southerners, because in the North, wood is the only building material, while in the South you have at hand both natural stone and

shell rock, and clay.

And this manifests itself at all stages of logging. From sawing and drying to assembling the finished log house and caulk.

By the way, if you buy wood, see how it dries. A smart forester dries the forest on stands at a height of at least 50 cm from the ground level - this is how moisture from the ground does not reach the boards and beams.

The third reason is fires.
For some reason I don't understand, the statistics say that they happen more often in the south. Maybe because the accounting is better there, maybe because more people live, and maybe because of the good "brazier" weather.
