Important rules for reliable do-it-yourself siding installation
Remember the golden words: "A genius is the person who guessed to bring scotch and glue to Russia - now everything is being repaired by them"? I would add only one word to this phrase - "siding".
These unique reinforced plastic or vinyl panels have made thousands of country houses, sheds, and other structures all over the country sweet. But in order to preserve this beauty for a long time, and not for 5-7 years, you need to know the rules for installing siding.
I've covered the five most important ones in this article. Read to the end!
Siding installation rulesa
Like any material, be it synthetic or natural, siding has a coefficient of thermal expansion. Speaking in Russian, it expands in the heat, and shrinks in the cold.
So that when the temperature changes, there are no gaps, or vice versa, the lamellas are not found one on top of the other, I advise you to observe the following gaps:
- installation of siding in summer: 6-9 mm.
- installation of siding in winter: 12 mm.
The second important rule.
Italso applies to the gaps, but not between the panels, but between the guides and the siding. Here a gap of 2-3 mm is needed: that is, you do not need to pull the siding too tightly against the vertical guide.
Now let's talk about fasteners
For fastening the siding, it is better to use short galvanized self-tapping screws with a round head but without a drill. In principle, roofing nails are suitable for the same purposes.
Roofing nails are good because they only slightly do not violate the integrity of the material into which they are driven, therefore, roofing nails are a good solution for roofing and installing soft siding.
Are Siding Guides Needed?
This question worries many, and we give an unequivocal answer to it:
- if their deviation is more than 7 degrees at the entire height of the wall, you cannot do without guides.
- if the walls are even, then you can do without them.
What are guides made of?
You can use a wooden beam 50 * 50 mm, pre-treated with fire protection or sagus.
You can also use a metal profile - it is not much more expensive, but much more reliable.
