This question arose extremely acutely after the house was sheathed with siding. The gap between it and the gas pipe that runs along the facade tends to zero. The first year after the renovation had to suffer. Then I learned how to easily and quickly cope with this task. I'm sure my experience will be useful to someone else.
Means of mechanization are useless in such conditions. With a hand tool, you also can't go around too much (it's easy to make holes in the siding with a metal brush or spatula). In fact of all possible options, only one remains - sand the pipe with sandpaper. But everything is not as simple as it might seem.
For the convenience of work, it is better to pre-cut the sandpaper into narrow strips.
The most obvious way to work is to run the sandpaper tape behind the pipe. And back and forth to start cleaning it. There - here, there - here ;-)
But it will not work normally to sand the pipe in this way. At least the first time. The fact is that sandpaper covers an extremely small area. Even if you change the position of your hands, there is still a "dead zone". We have to clean it up.
If you do not want to finish the work in six months, you will have to rub hard enough. As you can imagine, the ribbon in your hands heats up quickly. Feelings are not the most pleasant. You clean it 3-5 meters and you want to spit on everything. And in my case, the pipes are about twenty meters.
Over time, it seems to me, came to a better way of cleaning. Wrap the emery tape around the pipe twice. In this position, it evenly covers the entire area. You don't have to clean up anything.
This method has revealed the only drawback - you have to make a little more effort. But when you adapt, the process goes like clockwork.
