It's always cold in the house, the windows are leaking... 5 gross mistakes in installing window sills
I had to reinstall the window sill recently. In my case, it was installed with a small joint. But an error in installation can cause serious consequences: windows are blown out, double-glazed windows "cry", etc. Did you know about this? Let's talk about the problems that I have encountered. I am sure it will certainly help someone.
The windowsill rose
Let's start simple. The master installed the window, everything is beautiful, he took the money and left. And you woke up in the morning and the window sill is a propeller.
This is the increase in the volume of polyurethane foam and curved the window sill with the letter "siu". To prevent this from happening, after installation you need to load it: put a bag with a building mixture on top or put a couple of buckets of water. The installers are just shy people: “How is it possible to ask the owner for something? We ourselves. We have a service. We'll get out somehow. "
Mold at the junction of the window sill and frame
And installers most often unscrew like this: they apply a couple of strips of foam under the windowsill at a great distance from each other. It is applied so that it has enough space to expand, but it does not lift anything. But, as usual, something goes wrong.
If the installer is "green", it is not a fact that he will propenet the area near the frame. There is no guarantee that the foam will take up all the space when it expands. Ironically, emptiness remains in the weak spot. Then freezing and long live the mold.
The wind is in the apartment
Other story. Under the windowsill everything was securely foamed. Several buckets of water were placed on top. But they saved a little. It was decided not to put the support profile, and the supporting wedges (pads) were placed too rarely.
The sill sagged slightly under the weight of the bucket. Foam will not lift it. A gap of a couple of millimeters is enough to create a noticeable air movement in the room in windy weather. Less often than every 40-50 cm, I would not put lining.
The windows started crying
What depth are you being asked to install the windowsill? But whatever you say, they will put it like that. The installers don't care. But a wide (deep) sill can disrupt convection. The warm air flow will go far from the glass and condensation will appear on the surface.
In an amicable way, the window sill should not protrude beyond the wall further than to the middle of the radiator.
Stick out flush
Laughter, laughter, but this story is taken from life. It turns out this way most often when they first put a window, and then they begin to level the walls. It is extremely difficult to correctly position the window if there is no reference plane in the form of a flat wall. Big risk of messing up.
But there is a way out, even if the windows must be installed before the plaster. We just install the window sill last. It turns out to be skewed - we remove it due to the "diagonal" trimming of the window sill at the junction with the window frame. There, these millimeters (and even a centimeter) will not be striking.
