Liked the homemade compost sieve
Why plant compost at all? And it is necessary to clean it from pests, and from unprocessed organic matter, and break up clods.
If there is not much compost, and you can count pests in it on your fingers, you can use your hands as a sieve.
But with such a device it is better:
Here is a large and small sieve. From vegetable crates with handles. Our friend has been using them for 15 years.
He puts it on a trolley or on linoleum, sorts out a portion for the presence of pests, places rainworms in maturing compost, then sifts. And once again looks for pests. For the wireworm, there is a bucket of water. They throw him there.
He has pests: wireworm, a little crustacean and scolopendra. By the way, a friend asked me to ask in the article whether it is necessary to destroy the centipede? He, just in case, destroys. All these insects are selected by hand anyway. The advantage of the device is that it produces a fluffy, homogeneous compost.
Here's a closer look:
In the box, 3 holes are made on each long side, six in total. In the corners and in the middle. Handles are screwed to them, each with three screws.
There are washers on the screw heads (to distribute the pressure load).
So, to make a sieve you will need:
- Box for vegetables
- Any comfortable handles, two, here they are 1.5 m each
- A hacksaw to cut the handles to the desired length. Or buy ready-made broomstick or rake handles.
- Six screws
- Washers six
- Screwdriver
- Drill 3-4 mm
Are you sieving compost? If so, which sieve?
