A wooden column cracked. Now I don’t know if the support will continue to fulfill its functions?

Cracks in logs and timber in the wall are normal and do not affect the strength of the structure. But when the column diverges, this is different. And most importantly, it is not clear how this will affect reliability?

A bunch of questions arise in the head of an inexperienced builder, when once having come to your construction site you see such an unpleasant picture.

And I immediately remembered how once doing something in the house, with sufficient silence, I suddenly began to hear a clear crack, which periodically, but lasted several hours, that I was there. The sound clearly came from the column, but then I did not attach any importance to it.

And now I'm starting to think what to do?

In fact, nothing terrible happened and everything can be solved. The question is how to fix everything with minimal costs, without big clutter, and without continuing the story, that is, once and for all.

🔹 Do nothing and it won't go anywhere.

Good theory, but not in your home

. Of course, for dozens of different elements, the column will not disperse, and as they say, "a thousand matches together, replaces one log" ..., I don't want to test it myself.

🔹 Self-tapping screws.

Tying everything with metal ties, on the one hand, is an excellent solution. But, even in my little experience of construction, I was convinced that self-tapping screws perfectly split wood, and they themselves break where they are not needed. So this option is definitely not ideal ...

🔹 Clamps.

This is what can save me. I mean the construction of such a plan:

Of course, invisible and beautiful, you cannot call such a "piece of iron"... But everything can be hidden under the decoration.

Moreover, many clamps are not needed. In my opinion, strengthening the top, bottom and middle of the column will be enough.
