What are the blue pipes along the railroad for?
Traveling around Russia by train, or just riding the train, you probably noticed that during in many places along the railroad bed there are metal pipes painted in blue or blue. What are they needed for?
This is how they look:
When I asked my fellow travelers this question, one of them told me that this is how the water supply with industrial water is laid, which is needed to refuel the train during a stop. And at first the version seemed logical - the pipes are also blue, as they stereotypically draw water.
But how does the water in steel pipes not freeze in winter? There are no heating cables around, and it is stupid to heat the street for 5-6 months a year ..
I asked the conductor a question, and she told:
Compressed air is injected in the blue pipes. It is needed in order to switch the arrows. The fact is that a person has not switched the arrows for a long time, everything is done by automation, and it works precisely on compressed air.
Plus, every 30-50 meters along the pipe there is a tap - through it, in which case, you can bleed air from the system.
