Yes, we are such self-builders... First we build, then we remodel. I hope these are the minimum losses that await me ...

Greetings friends. Well, the time has come for the first tangible alteration in my house under construction. Not that I expected this, but somewhere deep in my soul, I did not rule it out.

In my previous articles, I have already described how I discovered a crack in my foundation slab (go to the channel, and see the whole background).
Column is a possible cause of slab crack. I demolish the entire structure, and try (at least somehow) to strengthen the overlap.

✅ Of course, you can now regret that the stove is thin (120 mm, and stiffeners 400 by 400), and that the basement under such structures is not the case, but it is as it is. Now we need to do everything to improve the situation.

So it's time to take the main load off the stove.

The wood column that I so painstakingly installed under my wood floor could be the main threat to the foundation slab.

  • The column was not simply placed under the ceiling, but was "hammered" there, that is, there was an initial tension.
  • At the same time, it presses on one point of the plate, which is not reinforced by anything.

  • And under it in this place is the basement, i.e. empty ...

Yes, you can start throwing everything that is at hand at me. But at the time of the installation of this column, I was only looking at how it remarkably strengthens the wooden floor from above... And that's all. Only after the crack appeared in the slab, the mind woke up.

So to demolish a column is the least that a reasonable person can do.

This turned out to be very simple. He unscrewed the only anchor that fixed the column at the bottom, and moved it ...

The whole "pack" of nails that was driven in from above, very easily came out along with the support (still a big lever, there was no effort).

But the good will not be lost ...

In order to somehow strengthen my overlap, I decided to put this column as a transverse beam.

  • I put the timber in the gap between the already standing boards.
  • I pierced it all with 120 nails in a checkerboard pattern, on both sides.

But, according to sensations, the overlap did not receive much reinforcement. Of course, in any case, one cannot expect from the wooden structure of the monolith, but I still hoped... 😏

✅Although, a slight vibration of the floor is better than breaking the foundation. I choose the lesser of two evils, and I rejoice at what I have.

And about your views, write in the comments, your opinion and experience is very interesting.
