English meadow - impressions of the owner of a box of seeds
Subscriber story
Once my son brought me two boxes of seeds from England as a gift. These seeds were called "English Meadow".
We had a little space for an experiment, and there they sowed seeds before winter. The next year, they showed their face in all its glory. As they say, every creature in pairs. But everything was nondescript, in our opinion.
And so, among all the unattractive, unusually beautiful bunches of flowers began to rise. Who are these strangers? Oh, okay. Even without a name, but beautiful. They also turned out to be unpretentious. And for 15 years they have been living in our garden by themselves. They will appear here and there.
And only by chance I found out their name. It turned out to be a hybrid mullein.
I have known the mullein from an early age. As boys, we went to the steppe. They did not take food and drink with them. And we knew how to quench our thirst or hunger with the help of plants. All this wisdom of survival was taught by the older boys by their example.
Water could be obtained with the help of a straw from a young tulip leaf rolled into a funnel. Well, different herbs served as food. For example, a rape or a tartar. Among the field delicacies was the mullein. But in boyish language he was called bear's ear.
The bear's ear had yellow flowers strung on a one and a half meter rod. And now I find out that he has a close relative called the hybrid mullein.
And a question from the narrator:
As a child, how did you supplement your diet with the gifts of the field?
