Tomatoes at the end of October - useful mistakes
This year, since the beginning of August, we paid little attention to tomatoes in the greenhouse. I appeared there a couple of times (for planting garlic and for planting onions). The daughter remained the mistress. We removed some of the flowering brushes, pinched the tops. They stopped watering for a long time. They bloom at the end of October anyway!
The temperature at night dropped to 0 ° more than once. The doors never closed at all. An interesting moment about the door. Airing is more important than warmth. In the mornings, I found absolutely wet tomato bushes, while healthy. The leaves are green, without spots, only a little wilted:
It is wrong that there are still so many leaves. On the other hand, preservation of leaves contributed to an increase in the immunity of tomatoes, good nutrition.
Tomatoes still bear fruit. There are few greens, because the flowers were still removed:
It's sweet to pick a tomato and eat it in mid to late October! We are in no hurry to take them off, the fresh ones are tastier. We shouldn't have left it, but left it and enjoy the taste of freshly picked tomatoes.
With this approach, tomatoes are more suitable for quick processing and are well eaten. It is hardly worth leaving them for storage and ripening now. They were weakened by temperature extremes, cold and dew. And yet their endurance is amazing:
It made sense for a long time to remove all the tomatoes by cutting the plants at the root. It is illogical to leave them, fungal diseases are very real.
However, my spring-summer care has played a wonderful role: the tomatoes are so strong that they only please. Not in vain
- Watered and sprayed with beneficial bacteria
- Spared vermicompost (2-4 liters for each tomato)
- Trapped in ABA capsules and some ABA powder
- Fertilized on a sheet with adhesive
- I sprayed it with a bio preparation against pests (Lepidocide).
There is confusion and wobbling in the rows of tomatoes, but they are healthy:
All the beds are mulched with hay, this is warm to the roots now, and hay sticks from fungal diseases. Water bottles are also heat accumulators. Although the grandson takes them away for his needs on the sly. Little is left.
Two cats also warm the earth, lie in the hay.
Usually the autumn picture is such that you want to quickly remove everything so as not to see the unfortunate tomatoes. This time I admire:
The shading mesh has long been removed (the green bundle on the right in the photo), the heat is in the past, it's time to enjoy every sunny day.
These are the unexpected results of the surprisingly warm 2020 season for me. The observations were beneficial. It's one thing to know about the benefits of airing, good nutrition of tomatoes, strong immunity and prevention of diseases, it's another to see the result.
