4 good reasons to mow the tops before digging
For the 5th century in Russia, almost every family has been growing potatoes every year and, it would seem, all the subtleties and tricks should be known to everyone. But this is far from the case, and until now, many summer residents are wondering why mow potato tops before digging up.
In this note, we have answered this question in detail so that you do not just do it like everyone else, but know why you need it.
1. More harvest without leaves
The end of summer is not only the time when you and I reap the harvest, but also when we show off to each other what selected vegetables we managed to grow this year. So it turns out that if you cut off the tops of a potato 7-10 days before digging it up, then during this time the tubers will gain almost a quarter of their mass and will definitely please you with their size!

2. Much better suited for storage
Another good reason to get rid of the foliage is that the more greenery, the thinner the skin of the potato. And if at the very beginning of summer we like to eat young potatoes in their uniforms, then by autumn we must take care of how to preserve the harvest for the whole winter. And thin-skinned potatoes run the risk of not even waiting for the new year and you will have to run to the store.
3. Phytophthora - a gardener's nightmare
It is difficult to find a garden that would not suffer from late blight. As a rule, this fungus first affects the green part of the plant, but very quickly gets to the tubers, therefore timely disposal of the tops can save your crop and significantly reduce the number of rotten tubers in cellar.
4. It is more convenient to dig without haulm
There is a separate category of people who postpones all matters until the last, and then fussily tries to do everything at once, undermining their health and nerves to those around them. We suggest doing differently: one day you cut the tops and remove all unnecessary, the next day you start digging up potatoes. This will make potatoes healthier and you will have time to rest!
