Devices for taking out places for hinges using a router.

The other day, one of my readers sent me drawings and descriptions of several devices that help in installing doors.

I don't often have to put hinges on the doors and therefore I do it the old fashioned way - with a chisel and a hammer, but if I have to to install hinges often, then a simple device for a small and inexpensive edge router will be useful.

In fig. 1 shows the external view of the device, consisting of a clamping bar 1, in which the heads of the bolts 9 of the movable bar 2 are recessed without turning.

Through slots 3 allow the bar 2 to move along the clamping bar 1 and set the size for the hinge using nuts.

Several parts are attached to the movable bar 2: support base 4, rear 5 and right 6 stops. And the left stop 8 is attached to the clamping bar 1 through the spacer 7, which can be considered part of the left stop.

The figure below shows the detail drawings of this attachment for hinges 90 - 150 mm long. for the FER 900 router.

This attachment assumes the use of a side stop for the router.

And so that the device can be used to cut the hinges into both the door leaf and the door frame, it is required to use a spacer 12.

In fig. 2 shows the principle of installing the device on the door leaf 11 and on the box beam 16, as well as the operation of the router with the standard limiter 13 of the router.

As you can see from the figure, the spacer 12 allows you to mill both the door and the box under the hinge without changing the settings.

But the size of the spacer 12 must be taken into account when adjusting the device for the hinge.

As indicated in Figure 2. the size of the template for the cutter is the length of the spacer minus the diameter of the cutter.

As I said above, this device is designed to work with the side stop of the router. There are also options for devices for working with a copying sleeve.

For the sake of interest, I looked at what can be found on the network for tools for cutting loops. I found a site that offers such fixtures made of laminated plywood. The price for them starts from 3000 rubles.
