Ice Palace! A hotel in which guests sleep in sleeping bags and without heating.
The Ice Palace, located in the center of Swedish Lapland, is located 200 km from the Arctic Circle, in the small fishing village of Jukkasjärvi. The construction of this hotel is carried out continuously every year, as it melts every spring. And in winter, with the onset of frost, they begin to build it anew. A real winter miracle is being erected by the best craftsmen, as if they were building it for the snow queen herself!
An exhibition of ice sculptures is held annually in Jukkasjärvi. This tradition began back in 1989. During one of the exhibitions, a small ice house was built of ice - an igloo, such as in which the inhabitants of the extreme northern peoples live. But not only did everyone like this house very much, the organizers decided to diversify the event a little. Everyone was given the opportunity to spend the night in this igloo! Before such an extreme overnight stay, the organizers were obliged to carry out instructions to prevent hypothermia and gave out sleeping bags. The ice igloo was a wild success, which made me think about repeating this idea the next year and expanding this project. This is how the ice hotel "ICEHOTEL" was born!
ICEHOTEL is more than just a hotel, as it is a true work of art! Every year, with the onset of winter, the best craftsmen, designers, architects come to a village lost in the vast Lapland to turn snow and ice into a real winter fairy tale. The design of the hotel is unique! And this, of course, attracts a huge number of tourists who want to capture the disappearing and melting beauty!
From October to December, more than a hundred people are directly involved in the construction of the hotel. With the onset of cold weather, the nearby Torne River is covered with a thick layer of crystal clear ice, which is the main building material. Talented craftsmen use it to embody the most elegant fantasies. With the onset of the next winter season, new creations surprise visitors again.
The coldest hotel in the world opens its doors from December to mid-April. During this time, it is visited by about fifty thousand people from all over the world! Among them, about thirty-five thousand stay here overnight! The rest are content with just visiting such a unique place. During the day, the ice rooms are open to the public on a guided tour (daily in Swedish and English). Check-in of guests is possible only for the night (until 7 am)!
ICEHOTEL has more than 60 rooms, all of them differ from each other in style, design, decoration, dimensions and dimensions. The most impressive are the Deluxe Suites and Art Suites, which are designed by the craftsmen with special creativity.
The interior of the room in the category "Northern Lights" includes original lighting that imitates the reflections of the Northern Lights on the walls.
The rest of the rooms have a simpler design and are divided into ice, made from ice blocks, and snow, built from snow. There are no toilets in the ice hotel, they are located in a separate building.
Of course, you need to prepare for the night amid cold and ice. It is required to dress and put on shoes as warmly as possible. The staff will provide detailed instructions and provide sleeping bags for guests, deliver fresh hot juice to the room early in the morning and prepare the morning sauna. At the end, each guest is issued a certificate confirming the fact of an overnight stay in an ice hotel, which also indicates the temperature inside and outside the room that night.
Due to the low temperature inside ICEHOTEL (about 5 degrees below zero), it is not entirely comfortable to stay in it for the night for more than one night. The best option is to combine accommodation in an ice hotel with accommodation in a hotel with heated rooms. For example, guests spend 1 night in ICEHOTEL, the rest of the time they live in nearby wooden chalets.
Also worth mentioning is the local restaurant, where dishes from the ice menu are served on ice plates, and the ice church is an original wedding venue.
Among all this winter splendor, the Ice Bar Absolut stands out - the only part of the hotel complex that does not melt in the spring. By keeping the indoor temperature below zero, the bar welcomes visitors even in summer. Moreover, the popularity of the institution is so great that ice bars were opened under the same brand in Stockholm and London.
The bar's interior is made entirely of ice. Even the glasses in which the drinks are served are also ice cold. All visitors are given warm coats upon entering the Ice Bar.
The village of Yukkasjärvi was little known to the world before the appearance of the ice sculpture festival in the 80s, and a little later the ice hotel ICEHOTEL. Its population is 1100 people and 1000 dogs. What else can this place offer to tourists, with the exception of the world famous winter palace? In winter, you can go ice fishing, attend a master class on carving sculptures out of ice, go skiing, snowmobiles and even dog and reindeer sledding, get acquainted with the life of the Sami (the indigenous population of Lapland), steam in the sauna and, of course, enjoy the splendor of the northern lights.
For connoisseurs of exclusive rest, a separate program has been developed, including a transfer from the airport on a dog sled, a night in a deluxe ice hotel, champagne in the room, for dinner a 10-course tasting menu from the chef of the restaurant, including such delicacies as the heart of a deer, black caviar, crayfish. Upon prior request, this program can be diversified with a helicopter ride, winter sports, and additional excursions.
In summer, despite the absence of the "Palace of the Snow Queen", this region also attracts tourists with its unique nature, the opportunity to go fishing and rafting on the Torne River.
ICEHOTEL is a unique project reborn every winter in the snowy expanses of Sweden. Its success has spurred the creation of ice hotels in other countries - in Canada, Norway, Finland, Romania... But the Swedish ICEHOTEL is still the undisputed number one on this list.
Would you dare to spend the night in such a hotel?
