5 basic rules to fill your ice rink

Winter fun delights not only children but also adults. It's great to spend a weekend with your family, walking around the snow-covered city, playing snowballs or sledding. But I think skating is the main winter pastime. I love it when it is not only fun, but also useful.

Nowadays, an ice rink can be found in any big city. But for small settlements, this is a deficit. Therefore, if the temperature outside the window is freezing and the water freezes perfectly, I advise you to equip your own ice rink next to the house. I will tell you how to do it correctly.

1. Site selection. The area must be level. An asphalt pavement is perfect. If not, you can use soil. But at the site of the future skating rink, the soil should freeze 5 cm deep - no less.

2. Preparatory work. The site must be cleared of stones, sticks and debris. Then you need to build the sides from snow, soil or from boards. The sides must enclose and limit the area of ​​the rink.

3. The next step - snow compaction. The snow must be leveled and tamped down with a roller or skis to form a pillow with a thickness of 5 cm or more.

4. Filling the roller. The roller is filled in stages. You need to fill in several layers. Each subsequent one is poured after the freezing of the previous one. As a result, you should get a frozen layer with a thickness of 15 cm. Sometimes it takes several days. It is necessary to fill the skating rink at a temperature not higher than -5 degrees.

Tips for filling the ice rink:

• For self-priming, you need to use a spray hose or a shower head. It is better to direct it upward "like a fan" at an angle of 35-45 degrees, so that the water does not flow out in a stream into one place, but is evenly sprayed over the entire territory of the future ice rink.

• Start filling from the far corner, moving diagonally. The water should be sprayed in the direction of the wind. Each layer is poured from a new angle to avoid the formation of hills.
• If snow starts to fall during the freezing of the layers, it is worth removing it before each new pour.
• Before starting the next fill, you need to remove the debris from the frozen layer. Cracks should be filled with snow.
• Fill should be done at intervals of 4 hours. This time will be enough for the layer to freeze.

5. Roller surface grinding. The last finishing layer must be filled with hot water, which will melt the bumps, fill the holes and make the skating rink even and smooth.

The roller requires not only initial filling, but also maintenance during operation. It is necessary to regularly clean it of snow, periodically fill the resulting cracks and cuts from the skates with cold water or a snow-water mixture and grind the surface of the rink with hot water.

And do not forget that if you equip a skating rink on your site, there will be no problems. But if you decide to use public land for a skating rink, you should first get the consent and permission from the responsible persons.
