The unique roof structure of the SKK in St. Petersburg!

Today I want to speculate on the famous SCC "Petersburg" (once Lenin Sports Complex). It was erected in Leningrad to 1980 Olympic Games. It was a unique building in its constructions and characteristics. Huge, majestic, roomy - it was perfect for sports and concert events and satisfied all the wishes of sports fans and music fans.

Scientific and technical society of France turned on the building CCMnamed after Lenin to the group the greatest buildings of the twentieth century. And in 1988, the sports and concert complex was in the top five the best world engineering and construction achievements of the twentieth century. The sports and concert complex named after Lenin received these statuses thanks to roof structureswhich looked impressive.

The roof had a unique design - this is a huge all-welded sheet, which was covered with a steel membrane. Roof diameter was 160 meters. The structure included a ring made of reinforced concrete, to which 56 steel sheets made in the shape of petals were firmly attached. The petal ring rested on the columns. This design was unique and looked grandiose.

The roof was made so strong and reliable that it seemed like it could last for hundreds of years. In 2019 Union of Architects of St. Petersburg made a proposal classify the SSK as an architectural monument. But the proposal was not supported for the reason that the building was built less than 40 years ago. It was decided to wait until the CCM reaches the age of forty.

In January 2020 was produced building inspection sports and concert complex, and prepared roof unsatisfactory report. As it turned out, the roof was not properly covered with a waterproofing layer, due to which water leaked onto the metal elements and accumulated there, which led to metal corrosion. Attempts have been made in the past to add an additional layer of waterproofing, but this did not help correct the situation. The report states that corrosion has affected more than 50% of the entire membrane web. In some places the membrane has thinned to 2-3 mm. After receiving such an opinion CCM recognized as an emergency buildingthat needs to be dismantled. It was decided to install a fence and remove the corrosive part of the membrane.

The dismantling was started urgently and promptly. And instead of the planned activities, the pillars were demolished. Some time after that, it happened collapse of the roof of the SCK building. The official reasons for the collapse do not coincide with the opinions of outside experts. Unfortunately, the dismantling of the SKK roof ended in the death of one worker.
