How to properly waterproof your bathroom floor?
I will not surprise anyone if I say that the bathroom is always moisture and dampness. That is why moisture-proof materials are used to decorate the bathroom. But very often moisture penetrates under the finish through joints, seams and small cracks. And dampness is the most favorable environment for the appearance of mold, various microorganisms and insects. In addition, moisture can gradually destroy the concrete base. Therefore, it is so important to take care in advance that the bathroom always remains dry.
Where to start waterproofing your floor?
- Before applying waterproofing compounds, you need to prepare the floor surface. Waterproofing is laid on concrete, so it is worth removing all top layers (if any). After that, the vacuum cleaner removes all debris and dust.
- You need to carefully examine the surface of the floor. If it contains greasy or oil stains, paint residues, then they must be cleaned with special solutions, a brush and a spatula. All cracks must be covered with a moisture-resistant cement solution. Then vacuum the floor thoroughly again.
- Level the floor, sand the overhangs and apply 2 coats of primer.
- Only then apply a waterproofing layer, observing the technique of applying the selected composition.
Floor waterproofing is carried out in several ways:
- Okalechnaya. It is carried out by heating the bitumen-impregnated material with a burner and then melting it onto the floor. In this way, it is quite difficult to make waterproofing in a cramped, unventilated room.
- Painting or coating. It is carried out using polymer or bitumen mastic, special compositions of quartz sand, concrete and polymer materials, water-based acrylic paint. The selected mixture is applied in several layers to the floor, capturing part of the walls by 20-30 cm. The result should be a "hydro-trough". Each layer dries for about 6-8 hours. The waterproofing surface dries completely in about a day.
- Plastering. It involves covering the floor with plaster with the addition of polymer materials.
- Cast. It is carried out in two ways - by pouring a hot bitumen mixture or by pouring a cold mixture from liquid glass or rubber. Self-cast waterproofing will be difficult. You will need a special compressor and special skills.
