Wallpapering for beginners! Or how to stick wallpaper without bubbles and stay in a good mood
"While the wallpaper was glued - almost divorced!" - I often hear this phrase from friends. At first glance, it seems that it is difficult to paste the wallpaper? One or two, and you're done! But in the process of work, everyone and always have difficulties. Let's learn to deal with them! Today I will tell you how to properly glue the wallpaper.
The first step is preparing the room and walls.
- Be sure to de-energize outlets and switches.
- Remove old coatings (wallpaper, paint, whitewash). Skirting boards and door trims should also be removed if possible.
- Prepare the walls - align them and eliminate defects.
- Prime the surface with deep penetration adhesive or primer. It is very important. The primer will prevent the adhesive from absorbing into the walls and will provide better adhesion of the wallpaper to the wall.
The second stage is the phased wallpapering
Roll the wallpaper on the floor face upso as not to stain the wallpaper. We measure the height of the wall and cut off the strip with a margin of 5 cm. This is necessary so that in case of unevenness in the ceiling or floor, you have enough length.
If pattern matching is necessary, pick it up on the floor. Compare one strip with another and number it so you don't get confused later.
Advice! To minimize waste, it is advisable to cut the canvases from different rolls when adjusting the image.
It is better to start glueing wallpaper from the corner! We measure the width of the wallpaper, and measure this size from the corner. On the wall by level mark a clear vertical line.
Thoroughly coat the walls with glue. The corner and places near the ceiling or baseboards should be smeared with a brush. It is more convenient to apply the glue to the rest of the wall with a roller. Glue is usually not applied to wallpaper. But just in case, make sure of this by reading the instructions.
If the walls are poorly primed, or the quality of the walls is questionable, it is worth adding PVA to the wallpaper glue. About 0.5 cups of PVA per 1 pack of glue.
Next, we take the wallpaper tape and stick it on the wall. along the marked vertical line. Leave a gap on top near the ceiling. Using a soft spatula, level the wallpaper along the wall, carefully smoothing it from top to bottom so as not to scratch the drawing.
We check for air bubbles with our hands. Hands feel them best! Remove excess glue with a damp cloth.
Take care in advance that the rag does not shed or leave threads
Cut off the excess part. We apply an ordinary spatula, and cut off all unnecessary on top with a sharp knife. We do the same below.
Let's move on to the next tape. We glue the wall. Next, we apply the wallpaper, slightly pressing down from above, and join, adjusting the pattern. Then, holding the joint, peel off the top of the wallpaper and gently level the wallpaper along the wall with smoothing, non-pulling movements. First of all, we pass the joint with a spatula. And from the middle we level the wallpaper - first the top, then the bottom. Always keep an eye on the joint.
Cut off the excess. Now you have two stripes ready! And then everything is done by analogy! Nothing complicated!
