Lamp repair: replacing the jerk with a push button switch, installing the plug
This is for those who haven't tried doing yet DIY wall lamp repair, and before the pros, a big sorry. Step by step we will consider how to replace an electrical wire, a switch with a chain or a jerk with a classic push-button and then install a new plug from the outlet on the new wire.
For work, I prepare quite ordinary things: 1.5-2 meters of 2x0.75 square wires, a fashionable plug, a switch with a button. Unusual for such cases is perhaps a pair of Wago terminals for two wires.
I disassemble the lamp, remove the mounting plate from it, unscrew the jib and cut off the old wire with it, leaving only two short trims sticking out of the lamp tube.
On the new wire, I figure out where the switch will be. I plan to put it so that I don't have to pull my hand under the shade. I unscrew the switch, then cut it lengthwise with a knife and remove the top white insulation by 5 cm, then cut one of the veins and clean the edges on it by 0.5-0.7 cm.
I twist the edges of the cut wire tightly, put them in clamps with bolts and tighten with a screwdriver. I screw on the switch cover.
Moving on to connecting the new cable to the outputs on the luminaire. First, I attach the terminals to each wire and fix it with levers, then I put a short wire from the lamp in each terminal in random order and also fix it. There is no need to wrap anything with electrical tape.
It remains to mount the plug. I untwist it, remove the insulation from the free end of the wire and strip the wires by 1 cm. I insert the wires into the terminals with bolts at the end of the plug rods, as on the switch, and tighten the bolts, then below I press the wires with a plastic strap to the body and tighten them with one screw.
The outer insulation also extends slightly inside the plug. I collect the fork to the end.
It remains to screw in the light bulb, check the device for operability, screw the mounting plate into place with decorative pimples and hang the lamp in place. All the details of the repair can be perfectly seen in the video below. Share your practical thoughts in the comments.
