How much narrow strip of tile will the tile cutter cut? Checking
Tilers sometimes have to find a way out by cutting off very narrow strips of ceramic tiles. And often it does not depend on the qualifications of the employee, but on the situation where the layout of the tiles, its size or the available number of pieces are forced to do this only. But how much narrow strip can be cut with a conventional mechanical tile cutter? Sometimes this indicator even affects the advisability of buying it.
In my experiment, for the sake of truthfulness, I specifically use not a new, but a 9-year-old tile cutter with a conventional cutting roller, which, moreover, also has a little backlash. For example, I take the scraps of ceramic tiles 40x25 cm with a thickness of 7 mm.

I must say right away that this tool also cuts porcelain stoneware with dignity, although you have to push yourself, but what is the minimum width of a strip of porcelain stoneware - its limit, until I say exactly, but I'll check it somehow. For now, I will dwell on ceramics in more detail.
Fragments of ceramic tiles by 4cm wide the machine cuts without problems, as I was convinced for a long time, for example, when I cut strips for pasting pallet bases, which is in the picture above, or when I decidedtile the door slope. For this reason, I tried cut pieces already 40 mm. And up to a certain point, it turned out, which can be seen from video at the end.
Strips 25 mm wide cut as easily as wider ones. 20 mm - you can also cut it off and almost always it turns out without marriage. Get a positive result went up to the mark 17-18 mm - cut the strip across the entire width of the tile and without chipping. But with the width 15 mm break off a whole piece and it doesn't really work along the entire length.
Sometimes, the truth bounced off a whole, but then a whole bunch of marriage. So I think 17mm on my tile cutter is a reasonable limit.
As for an old tile cutter, the cut quality at the break is pretty good. Moreover, not once in a hundred attempts, but in almost every case. As a rule, I make a cut in one pass from the bottom up.
In order for the tile to break normally, I put the transverse foot not on the very top, but below the upper edge by 15-20 mm and slowly press the handle until the tile splits along the cutting line.
The platform must always be free of debris, otherwise they create additional points of support and interfere with the correct splitting of the pieces, due to which the fracture occurs in the wrong direction. Now the video.
