Double-disc grinder - cuts any metal without sparks like butter knife
In the early 2000s, I came across a video of one Russian inventor, Vladimir Popov. Basically, his innovations concerned the technology of manufacturing products from superceramics. But I remembered more another invention with a demonstration of a prototype - a grinder, developed by him in the 90s. with two discs rotating towards each other, which surpassed any analogues in speed, cut quality and safety.
Permanent magnet electric motor with motor braking system when biting the disc. And two discs rotating towards each other with teeth made of tungsten carbide inserts - cut any material like a butter knife.
It turns out that such grinders appeared on sale from Western manufacturers in our country somewhere in 2010. I don’t know if Western engineers got the idea from V. Popov or our inventor brought this idea from abroad. Now you can't figure it out. The main thing. such angle grinders with superior characteristics have been on sale for a long time, but for some reason they are not in great demand. I propose to figure out why this is so.
Tool type. Practically no different from angle grinders except for a different handle and the presence of two different disks (different landing diameters) with counter rotation.
First, about the advantages of a grinder with this principle of rotation of the cutting part with two discs:
- sawing any material with the same discs (any metal, wood, plastic). For concrete, separate discs with diamond sand are needed;
- an order of magnitude less sparks when cutting metal, the metal does not heat up;
- smoother saw cut (practically without metal scoring);
- higher speed and ease of cutting;
- no vibration during operation, which reduces the clamping of the discs;
- long service life of disks;
- the low price of this power tool, comparable to the price of an ordinary grinder.
This tool is the ideal solution for sawing painted sheet materials such as profiled sheet, metal tiles. The paint will not burn and there will be no cut corrosion.
An example of using such a grinder can be seen in this video:
Yes, it is clear that there are much fewer sparks, the cut was smoother. According to reviews from other videos: the grinder cuts very easily, goes into the metal like a knife into butter without significant pressure.
What are the disadvantages of this tool? There are few of them:
- large saw cut thickness: from 3 mm to 6 mm (depending on the manufacturer);
- cutting metal requires lubricating wax pencils (consumable);
- high cost of discs in comparison with discs for metal of a conventional grinder.
I did not find any obvious disadvantages against the background of a large number of advantages. But why has this tool not found wide distribution over so many years? The buyer believes that this is still an unknown novelty. There are few reviews. And if your neighbor doesn't have one, then you shouldn't risk buying it.
Honestly, I myself only found out about this type of grinder (that it is offered for sale by different manufacturers) when writing this article. Initially I wanted to write about a promising old development.
There is also a strong misconception among potential buyers that any disc with teeth on a grinder is a guaranteed injury (it is only a matter of time and chance). But few people take into account that the discs rotate towards each other with almost complete absence of vibrations (beating of the instrument) and biting is unlikely.
When you bite an ordinary grinder, its disc is destroyed and the grinder will remain in your hands (but fragments of the disc may fly in). And in a two-disc with teeth, this is allegedly fraught with the tearing of the tool from the hands and the consequences. But this is extremely unlikely than in a single disc.
There are already many manufacturers of such two-disc grinders on the market. There are reviews, but they are few. The buyer is skeptical about new products. At one time, I was lucky with the Renovator - the development was advertised on TV-shops under the headings “Shop on the Sofa”. And where there is demand, inexpensive offers appear. Although, it is also a rare tool to use.
If there are doubts about the safety of this type of grinder, then you can protect yourself as much as possible by purchasing a stand for a grinder or an electric double-disk saw:
Who has used such two-disc power tools - write your feedback in the comments. They will help to understand the unpopularity of this type of grinder against the background of its obvious advantages.
