Free foundation of car tires for a sauna, gazebo or garage

The foundation is the foundation of any building. The purpose of the foundation: to hold the walls on itself, preventing them from deforming, which can lead to cracks and even destruction of the structure. And also the foundation must withstand frost heaving of the soil.

But there are wall materials that are not demanding on the foundations: a bar, a rounded log, or even a structure built using frame technology. For such houses and structures, inexpensive bored foundations, foundations on screw piles are used. But there are people who risked going even further - they made a free foundation based on used car tires.

Tires laid out in a plane and filled with sand will not only resist frost heaving (they will distribute deformations from the underlying heaving soil), but also keep all the load from the house. There is a saving of sand, because tires are free but have volume in this cushion. Tires are given free of charge by any tire service. I drove 4-5 places and scored as many as needed.

Savings on the ground can be estimated from this photo. Tires take up part of the area.

Tires must not only be laid in a horizontal level, but also densely filled with sand and gravel. Nothing complicated, it only takes time. Everything is done on the spot.

As a rule, such a basis is made in order to save money. The foundation is concrete and reinforcement. Or screw piles (factory made) - all have a cost.

In the worst case, a structure with such a base of tires will simply raise it above the ground (by the amount of frost heaving). You can, of course, use just concrete blocks, but they also have some cost.

But how to hide the tires under the building? You also need to take care that the building is not overturned by a hurricane wind.

A gazebo, a woodshed, a barn are simple lightweight structures. And this type of foundation is quite acceptable for them. I do not see anything critical when applying this technology for such buildings.

Some build small wooden country houses and baths on a tire foundation. For construction projects in the village, where every penny counts, this technology will be justified.

But someone goes even further. They equip a low strip foundation (grillage) on top of this cushion of tires filled with sand. Soil heaps take over the tires and the lightweight tape will not break - the logic is that. The tires allow this grillage to be lifted off the ground. Less concrete needed.

There are those who made a large base from two layers of tires. And I even laid slabs on them, which, I think, is not the right decision. A stone house cannot be built on such a foundation, only a frame structure that is not afraid of vibrations and small deformations of the soil. Apparently, this will be a house built using frame technology.

I think that in a house built on such a foundation, there may be vibrations in gusts of wind, because the foundation is not so rigid. Rubber is a shock absorbing material. However, the tires are filled with sand and this effect may not be felt. What do you think about such a reduction in construction costs?

In conclusion - a video that many use this method to reduce the cost

It is difficult to call such a foundation a foundation. Most likely this is still a cushion of sand and gravel in the formwork of car tires.
