How to protect water pipes from freezing.
Thermal insulation of a water supply system in a country house is a very important point, since non-insulated pipes can fail at the first frost. The best option is to lay pipes into the ground deeper than the level of freezing of the soil (2 m or more). However, this method is quite laborious, therefore, communications are laid at a depth of 0.5-1 m, providing good thermal insulation.
Types of heaters:
1. "Shells". These are rigid cylindrical shells that fit over the pipe.
2. Sheets, rolled into rolls.
In composition, they come from:
- mineral wool. It swells under the influence of moisture and seals the joints between the sheets of insulation. Service life - 10 years, oil-painted thermal insulation will last up to 20 years. Additional waterproofing is required.
- basalt fiber. It protects the water supply system well from freezing, but it also needs waterproofing.
- synthetic rubber. It has low thermal conductivity, light and non-toxic, elastic. It is produced in the form of sheets and pipes.
- polyurethane foam. Insulation with a long service life, easy to install. The shell of this material is protected from moisture penetration by a layer of foil or fiberglass.
- polyethylene foam. It has lower thermal insulation properties than other materials; after installation, it can disperse at the joints.
3. Thermal insulating paint. It is produced in the form of aerosols, it is applied evenly over the entire surface of the pipe. Provides protection against temperature extremes and pests.
4. Heating cable. It can be mounted both outside and inside pipes. The cable is laid along the pipe, secured with special tape and connected to the network.
