What should not be added to seedling soil
Growing seedlings is a responsible and painstaking business, which novice summer residents do not always cope with successfully. And the reason for this is not always low-quality seeds, most often it is the wrong soil or improper handling of fertilizers.
And today in my article I decided to figure it out with you - what should not be added to the soil so as not to spoil the seedlings?
Cannot be added to soil:
Fresh organic matter and actively decomposing substances
Fresh organic matter is most often referred to manure, compost, fresh sawdust, fallen leaves. Fresh organic matter, which has not been quail for a year, emits a huge amount of heat, which in turn burns all living things in the soil (roots, beneficial bacteria, etc.).
In the process of decay, a large emission of gases and heat occurs, which harms the roots of small seedlings, because of which they quickly die. Also, fresh manure is harmful to many plants that cannot tolerate an active acidic environment.
Sawdust it is good to use only during seed germination, as the seed receives a sufficient amount of oxygen and an excellent root system develops. But for further germination, the sawdust substrate will not work, you still have to transplant the seedlings into the ground.
Fallen leaves also not the best option for breeding seedlings. The fact is that in order for the seedlings to be strong, the fallen leaves must be carefully selected for it, otherwise you can infect all the plants.
Large amount of fertilizer
In a desire to quickly get a harvest, some may overdo it with fertilizing the soil, which affects the seedlings. Due to the excess fertilizer, the sprouts will simply grow more slowly.
Clay
The worst nightmare of any gardener. Clay makes the soil heavier and makes it unsuitable for germinating seedlings. Clay absorbs all moisture, dries quickly and becomes like a stone. Fragile plants simply die from lack of nutrients and water in the soil where clay is present.
Construction sand
Smart gardeners know that it is sometimes helpful to add small amounts of sand to the soil. This improves the quality of the soil: makes it looser and fills it with microelements. Yes, but all of these tips apply to sand that is mined from water bodies, not from quarries.
Quarry sand does not have any useful qualities and does not help plants in their growth. Therefore, I can say with complete confidence that adding quarry sand is useless on your site.
