How to perfectly lay linoleum on uneven floors, old finishes
Linoleum is a fairly soft floor covering. If you put it on an uneven floor, then all defects will become noticeable and you will have to rebuild it. To avoid this, we offer some tips to help with the repair.
Linoleum can even be placed on a wooden floor. It makes no sense to change if it is still strong enough. Here are a few measures that will help to lay linoleum on the old flooring beautifully and without flaw.
Getting rid of the squeak before linoleum flooring
First, we check for a squeak. If the boards are covered with fiberboard, then we use this method. First, we look for lags. Take a thin drill and drill holes to find the logs. If the drill goes with effort, then we hit the log, if the drill falls freely, then there is no log. It's pretty simple.
In places where the lags pass, draw a line with a pencil. Usually the logs are at a distance of 45-50 cm from each other.
We wrap the screws in the places marked with a pencil. We stretch the entire floor like this. Now the floor will not creak.
It is important to deepen the screw caps a little. The recesses can be putty.
If there are large gaps between the boards, then they can be sealed with polyurethane foam or putty.
Seizures on the boards, differences in height are best eliminated. Otherwise, the boards will still show through.
The best option is to cover the floor with plywood (12-18 mm) for leveling.
You can glue plywood in 2 layers and fix it additionally with self-tapping screws. Then remove the dust and cover the plywood with linseed oil.
Some people think that the linoleum underlay can level the uneven floor. But this is not the case. The backing is good only for soundproofing and thermal insulation. For linoleum, choose a cork backing (2 mm is enough).
For leveling relief up to 3 mm. mastic helps well. It should be applied on a dust-free floor surface. The mastic levels the floor and fixes the linoleum securely. But working with mastic requires some skills.
