Why indigenous peoples in Africa build round houses

The cradle of humanity today is one of the most underdeveloped and poorly studied regions of the planet. In Africa, there are territories where no man has yet set foot, but we will go to the regions inhabited by tribes to find out how they live and what kind of dwellings the indigenous people of the African continent build.

Africa is located in different climatic zones and the choice of material for building a dwelling directly depends on natural and climatic conditions. But the round shape of the houses is a tribute to ethnic traditions. The lifestyle of the tribe, whether nomadic or sedentary, is also an important criterion in the choice of material and form of dwelling.

The conical shape of the house with a round base prevails among almost all tribes. They are made from materials that are available to residents in nature. There are houses that are skillfully decorated with carvings, simple interior decoration made of stones and clay. All have a round shape, but they differ in the slope of the roof, the presence of windows and the entrance.

The tropical part of the house has a low entrance. There are no windows, or it is one and very small. Africans spend little time within the home, and therefore windows serve as a ventilation, and not a source of light. In tropical regions of Africa, round houses are woven from twigs. The roof and walls of such dwellings are a single whole and resemble bee hives.

The most common type of round houses is called rondavels, which are built by tribes in the north and south of the African continent. The walls are erected from stone, and then coated with manure-containing mixtures. The roof was built from branches, and the more massive ones from processed wooden beams. The nomadic tribes use light, portable reed huts.

You can argue with evolutionary theory, not recognizing Africa as the ancestral home of man, but you must agree that the dwellings of African captives harmoniously fit into the picturesque landscapes of the continent.
