Visiting the Portuguese: Separate waste collection starts in the kitchen

For the second year now, they have been trying to involve Russians in separate waste collection. A large-scale program of territorial solid waste management has begun. A lot of legislative documents have appeared that regulate this issue. And even in some places in large cities containers for collecting plastic waste and glass have been installed. But the mechanism starts with a great rattle. Either the motivation is insufficient.

Agree, we are far from Europeans, who installed machines that accept aluminum cans for euros. Either the habits are too stable. And yet, when we find ourselves abroad, we try to live by the rules of the owners, we are surprised at the cleanliness of the cities, the multi-colored garbage containers installed on the streets and squares.

Portugal, a member of the European Union, has committed to increase waste recycling by 2020 to 50%. Indeed, on the streets of Portuguese cities, you will not find lonely trash containers. They are always in the company with two or three similar ones of different colors.

Glass has settled in green containers, plastic containers in yellow ones, and cardboard and paper in blue ones. The secret of the success of the separate collection of waste in Portugal is associated with clearly defined objectives, broad involvement of the population, and strong support from the municipal authorities. Most of the organic waste is collected and composted in specialized companies

The same rules apply to hotels and hostels. Even in the old albergue with a stone hearth (hostels for pilgrims walking along the pilgrimage path of St. Santiago), everyone also respects these conditions. But residents of different countries stop here for just one night, in order to go further to their goal in the morning,

Do not be surprised if you come across four containers of different colors in the kitchen of a cozy modern Portuguese apartment, occupying an entire corner. This has become the norm for the Portuguese, realizing that without strict adherence to these rules, it will not be possible to preserve the unique nature that they inherited.
