Some Sri Lankans live in houses with wicker-framed walls filled with clay
I saw the amazing structure of walls for the construction of a residential building while traveling in Sri Lanka. Being an engineer by profession and having experience in the construction industry for more than five years, to be honest, this type of construction was an original find for me.
The first thing that catches your eye is the texture and color of the walls - they resemble cobbled enlarged toy houses made of plasticine. By tactile sensations, the wall is rough and warm, but it is difficult to judge the heat-technical ability of the wall, since the country is located on the equator and the climate is always hot.
The wall itself is not a load-bearing element, it only protects the house from wind and precipitation. The supporting structures are columns and beams made of logs, tied together with strong ropes. The roof is made of woven leaves like a basket. But the leaf roof material is not laid over the entire area of the house.
In the part where the kitchen or cooking area is located - a roof made of metal profiled sheets along metal guides. There is no stove in the kitchen, an open fire is used to heat food, so the metal roof over the kitchen is a fire-safe solution.
The interior of the house resembles a cave. The walls from the inside have the same texture, the rooms are not finished, elementary plaster is not used, I am already silent about wallpapering. Homemade wooden furniture, kitchen shelves for storing dishes are made of small diameter wooden logs.
And people really live in these houses, they do household chores, children go to school, do their homework. Of course, not all residents of Sri Lanka live in such conditions, there are also modern residential multi-storey buildings, luxury cottages. But the presence of unusual houses made of clay, which fills the wicker frame of the walls, also takes place.
