"Thin" houses in Vietnam, one brick thick
Vietnam is a very beautiful and interesting country with its own characteristics, which can sometimes surprise or delight those who are not familiar with the life of Southeast Asia. I will tell you about the unusual architecture of central Vietnam.
The first thing that catches your eye when you come to any Vietnamese city is the buildings. It does not matter what kind, it may be hotels, residential buildings, offices or shopping centers, but they all have one feature - they are "thin and long".
The fact is that throughout Vietnam there is a high tax for the width of the area adjacent to the road, so most houses do not exceed 4.5 meters wide, and an ordinary private house can reach 4 floors in height, while hotels grow into multi-storey skyscrapers.
The Vietnamese build houses very quickly. As a rule, 3-4 months are enough for a house with repairs, plumbing and furniture to grow on a vacant lot. This rapid construction is facilitated by the climate of central Vietnam, the air temperature here does not drop below 200 C (even 200 - this is already considered cold by the locals. Once a taxi driver I knew refused to take me to the store in the morning, because, as he said: “At night it was +20 frost, my car would not start”). Since there is no need to insulate houses, they are built one brick thick, therefore the construction speed is very high.
Almost all houses are tightly adjacent to each other, so there are no windows at all on the side walls, respectively inside houses in some rooms they are also not there, or they go out into the entrance or into some common living room.
Another feature of Vietnamese buildings is that almost every house on the ground floor has a business of some kind.
This can be a small shop, motorcycle repair, hairdresser, massage parlor, cafe and much more. The state of Vietnam supports small businesses and imposes very low taxes on them, so anyone can open something of their own without leaving home.
Here is such an interesting Vietnam, which is so unusual for us. Have you been to this country? Did you notice any other architectural features?
