Cowrie tree - what old mansions in New Zealand are built from

click fraud protection

As already mentioned, in New Zealand there are entire districts consisting of houses built from the past and the last century. The houses are almost completely wooden, but at the same time they stand for a long time, do not rot or deteriorate, despite heavy rainfall. Why is this happening?

The old buildings were constructed of cowrie wood. This plant is a landmark of the country, as it grows only here, with the bulk on the northern island.

The tree practically does not rot and remains for a long time. Cowrie has been growing for more than one thousand years, very beautiful, strong, huge in size. Biologists say this coniferous tree is older than dinosaurs. The most famous and oldest copies have their own personal names and are protected by law. Criminal liability is provided for damage to a plant "with a plate".

Cowrie houses were built only earlier, now it is not easy to find such material. Cutting down trees is prohibited, except for specially grown ones. In addition, every citizen has the right to independently plant seedlings on his site and use them at his own discretion. But the material is rare, therefore expensive. It is mainly bought for renovation and reconstruction of old buildings that are the architectural heritage of New Zealand.

There are cowrie forests in every region of the country. But now the entrance there is guarded almost everywhere. Small young plantations are fenced, in large forests special services are supervised. The fact is that a few years ago, some kind of infection appeared among the plants that destroys these unique trees. Therefore, special devices are equipped at each entrance to the green grove.

Before entering a park area or forest belt, you must disinfect your shoes with a spray bottle with a clear liquid. Moreover, none of the locals will ever enter the forest without doing this, even if the device is very far away. The feeling of ownership and responsibility for the land and everything connected with it is too strong in this country.

In addition to special services, volunteers supervise in forest belts, free of charge. In addition to talking to visitors, they also help keep track of the number of possums, which are also a threat to trees. Plastic fences are placed around especially large specimens so that animals cannot get to it and spoil it.

Recently, more and more conversations have been raised that these animals need to be exterminated, since they are pests and destroy not only the unique flora, but also the local fauna.
