What modernist houses look like in Barcelona and why they are interesting
Why do tourists visit Barcelona? Some are attracted by beaches, others dream of taking a walk along the bustling Ramblas and the narrow streets of Barry Gothic. Still others are attracted by the shopping or entertainment that this eternally vibrant and cheerful capital of Catalonia can provide.
But there is a class of tourists who come to Barcelona to look at the creations of the great architect, Antoni Gaudí. And not only the Sagrada Familia cathedral became famous throughout the world for the architect of modernism. In Barcelona (as well as in Gaudi's hometown of Reus) there are many houses built by the maestro.
It's easier with Reus: all the houses of the famous native of this small town are concentrated in its main square. But the city authorities of Barcelona were forced to publish a special guide, which allows tourists to view all of Gaudí's masterpieces without wasting time and effort. Do you think it is interesting to see the buildings erected at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries?
Personally, I am not at all in love with architecture. But Gaudí's creations shook me to the core. Its buildings look... like a jewelry box, like a fancy bird set free. And it seems to me that Salvador Dali, to some extent, drew his inspiration from the works of Antoni Gaudí.
And it all started with a passion for the Middle Ages. At the end of the 19th century, houses with elements of the Gothic or Renaissance began to be erected in Europe. Returning to Barcelona, the young architect built several buildings where the Romanesque pillared windows, vaulted ceilings, battlement towers and balconies-loggias, in the manner of a palazzo from the time of the High Renaissance. Gaudí developed this direction in architecture, becoming the founder of the neo-Mudejar style (modernism with elements of Moorish architecture).
After some time, Gaudi decided that no human creation can be compared with the creation of God - nature. And his masterpieces copy grottoes, waves, rocks. In his houses, there are no dull straight lines, sharp corners, pedantically verified surfaces. Everything floats, flows and sparkles with bright colors. Here is a house with a roof like fish scales, turrets similar to toys of a giant child, a rotunda that looks more like a diadem...
When you enter the Sagrada Familia, it seems that this is a cave in a coral reef.
Believe me, the route between the Vicens, Mila, Batlló, Calvet houses is not wasted time. It's amazing that people live in these masterpiece buildings. After all, the interior design of houses is completely consistent in the same style.
Indeed, the best architect is nature.
