Features of multi-storey buildings in permafrost regions
Unusual houses are being built in permafrost regions. It would seem that the usual panel high-rise buildings, of which there are a great many in the vastness of our homeland.
But here, in the eternal ice, their construction has its own peculiarity: the houses rise above the ground on a pile foundation, which makes them look like houses on chicken legs.
The thing is that frozen soil is very sensitive to heat penetrating from the surface of the earth than the more heat acts on the surface, the more it thaws, and the greater the likelihood of destruction building. Houses built on permafrost in the usual way are sometimes literally turned out of the ground. This happened with many houses built during the construction of the BAM, and in Canada people had to simply leave two cities, as the houses were destroyed one after the other.
According to technology, in order to build a house in the permafrost zone, you must first drill wells to a certain depth, then piles are installed in these wells, which are then poured concrete. The house will then be built on this frame.
In winter, the space between the house and the ground is cleared of snow so that it is well blown by the northerly winds, and in summer it is closed to keep it cool.
Some houses are built directly on the ground or leave minimal space. In this case, in order to avoid deformations of the structure, a reliable heat-insulating layer is provided.
It is interesting that communications in the regions of the far north are laid much deeper than in regions with a warmer climate. This is understandable, in order to avoid freezing, pipes have to be laid at a depth of 6 meters. In small villages, pipes are laid on the surface of the earth.
The permafrost regions have a rather harsh climate. The average annual temperature ranges from -2 ° C and below, although the summer is quite warm, it ends very quickly. Such a regime undoubtedly builds character.
Would you be able to live in the land of severe frosts?
