Do-it-yourself metal roof tiles with complex configurations - a real experience
Oh, experience, son of difficult mistakes ...

The beloved dacha became cramped, the children grew up and already in one room, albeit 25 squares, there was not enough space. The decision to add a couple more rooms to the country house did not come suddenly, it was formed over the years. Conceive and implement are two different categories. But we decided to give it a try. And now the material was purchased, the timber was folded, the truss structure was mounted.
They decided to cover the roof with metal tiles. It is beautiful, reliable, although more expensive than the same ondulin or corrugated board. The material was purchased, and the installation began. It was at this stage that we encountered certain difficulties. But, all in order.
Preparing the roof for flooring with metal tiles
The roof structure is gabled variable. Such roofs create volume in the room of the upper floor, so they chose it. The dimensions of the timber in the axes are 6 meters. The rafters are mounted with a pitch of 600-700 mm. The second floor is planned to be warm, so the rafters are 150 mm thick for the purpose of further warming the premises.
We decided to cover the roof from one side first. For this, a lattice flooring was organized along the rafters with a step of 1.5 of the board width from below and a continuous flooring in the upper part. Then they pulled on the moisture-proof film and secured it with additional wooden planks. Planks were placed perpendicular to the flooring along the rafters. This was the biggest mistake novice roofers made! The opposite was true!
Advice: sheets of metal tiles must be fixed to a wooden flooring with a transverse or oblique arrangement of boards relative to the direction of the rafters! Otherwise, adjusting the fastening of the sheets becomes an almost impossible task.
The adjustment of the fasteners for the sheets of metal tiles was very slow. The wave of the sheet did not stand on the bars, as a result, it was necessary to build up additional flooring with the position of the boards along the rafters. The second roof slope was already closed correctly. The flooring was organized so that the boards for fastening the sheets were strictly perpendicular to the waves.
How to properly lay metal tiles
Again, bitter experience gave us the answer to this question. The length of our roof is 8.6 meters, that is, 8 sheets of 1100 mm wide were overlapped. We went from the left to the right. The first sheets lay down normally, but starting from the third sheet the overall structure began to shift downward. It came to be understood that towards the end of the roof we have laid the tiles with a large deviation from the roof horizon. The adjustments began again. As a result, the structure tilted, but within tolerances.
Tip: the roof tiles should be started from the middle sheet and driven in both directions so as not to knock the horizon down! Otherwise, if the last sheet deviates from the horizon by more than 3-5 cm, you will have to redo everything, because the integrity of the roofing will be violated.
The second roof slope was already installed correctly. The horizon is sustained. The work was done quickly. And there were no deviations. Conclusions have been made, it is necessary to lay the metal tile correctly.
Tile laying sequence
It would seem that our roof consists of 4 slopes, two of which are in contact with each other. We learned about the sequence of the flooring exclusively by experience. We started from the problematic right side. We decided to first lay the lower part, then carefully arrange the upper one.
So, the lower slope of the right side is laid. We are planning to proceed to the upper part, but... there is no longer an opportunity to approach the upper part! The installation of the upper slope had to be laid, relying on the newly installed shingles. The thickness of the metal of the tiles is only 0.5 mm, the waves of the sheet do not fully rest on the boards of the working floor. An adult cannot walk on such a structure, the metal bends, the paint is erased, and any point load threatens to crush the sheets.
The installation of the upper part of the roof was carried out for a very long time, because everything had to be done practically lying on a new structure. The process of raising new sheets to the installation site was especially problematic. Believe me, this is very inconvenient!
Tip: With a complex roof configuration, you first need to install the upper structures, and only then proceed with the lower structures.
We already closed the left part of the roof correctly. First, the upper part was mounted, then the lower part was laid quietly. It is also worth noting that during the installation of the right part of the roof, the tiles did not fit neatly into the joint. A gap remains, which will later have to be closed with special overlays. This leads to additional costs. The joint of the sheets on the left turned out to be neat, no additional investment and work required.
In conclusion, I would like to note that everything can be done with your own hands, but before starting work, you need to find out all the subtleties and nuances of performing these works.
