How inventive Pomors built houses and organized everyday life
Pomors are a people living on the shores of the White Sea. The harsh climate has tempered their character. The traditional dwellings of the Pomors were to match themselves - powerful, heroic.
Houses were built from logs. Pomors did not use nails and bolts. Without them, the tree lasted longer. The cracks between the logs were filled with moss. Pomeranian houses were ascetic. No protruding balconies or attics. The windows and doors were small to keep warmth out of the house.
The dwellings of the Pomors were built according to the principle: a house, a yard and a barn - under one roof. This is very convenient, because the peasant did not need to go outside in the cold to look after the livestock. Surprisingly, only a third of the total area was allocated for the residential part.
The utility rooms were located in the back of the house. A stable was located on the ground floor. A spacious hayloft was built over the stable - a story. Not only hay was stored there, but also tools. In the summer, the room served as an additional bedroom.
A special hole was cut in the floor of the district through which the hay was dumped directly into the barn. A special entrance - import was attached to the second floor from the street. Along it, the horse brought a cart with hay to the lead. It's amazing how well thought out and convenient everything was!
The stove played an important role in the interior. She heated the hut, served as a sleeping place, cooked food and dried things in it. The stoves were smoke-free - no chimneys. The smoke from the stove poured directly into the hut, heated the air and exited through the ventilation holes in the ceiling. At the same time, the walls remained clean, only the ceiling was black. These stoves were believed to provide more heat, require less wood, and even kill germs.
Despite the limited materials and tools, there were hardly two identical houses in the village. Craftsmen showed imagination and decorated houses. The main decorative elements are an ochlupen (ridge) on the roof, platbands (shutters) on windows and quays (carved boards on the roof).
Every year there are fewer and fewer real Pomor houses. It is very sad that together with them we are losing a whole layer of culture. What do you think needs to be done to stop this process?
