How I grow Tuu from a twig. Subtleties of planting and care
Near my dacha, a beautiful thuja is growing, which must have been planted about eight years ago... But why not plant a few more of these wonderful evergreen trees?
So I decided and did not hesitate to start implementing the plan for growing thuja from a twig, but at the same time, I want to share this method with everyone! The method is proven and if you do not deviate from the rules - everything will work out!
Harvesting cuttings
For cutting thuja (and this is the scientific name for growing from a twig), there are three suitable periods:
· In the first 2 weeks of April - when the sap is actively moving in the trees;
· In June - when the plants are still in the growing season;
· In October - when the movement of juices slows down.
Cuttings should be taken from healthy trees 2-3 years old (so I had to go to the neighbors for thuja). A stalk, 50-60 cm long and about 7 cm in diameter, must be cut off sharply, by moving the knife from top to bottom or obliquely, leaving a piece of bark about 2 cm (so-called "heel").
And definitely - from the top of the tree! Because if you take it from the side, the plant can develop curved.
To increase the chances of survival and successful adaptation, from almost the entire cutting except the tip, remove the needles, make cuts on it and immerse it in a growth stimulator for 12 hours (suitable "Kornevin").
Rooting
Theoretically, this can be done in a pot with a substrate (river sand, peat, garden soil - 1 part each), but thuja - one of the most hardy plants in the world and it can simply release roots at this stage even in a normal water. But the next stage is really responsible.
Landing in open ground and care
It can be carried out as soon as there are not only roots on the cuttings, but also 1-2 new shoots.
The place for planting thuja should be well warmed up by the sun, its rays should flow freely here in the morning, and a light shadow should be here from lunch to evening. Naturally, drafts are unacceptable.
Someone prefers to plant thuja immediately in a permanent place, someone in a temporary bed (the so-called school).
The potting mix is ideally made up of equal parts of turf, peat and sand.
Transplant cuttings should be placed at a distance of 25 cm from one another.
The best time for this is autumn, but before frost. The fact is that if a plant survives the winter, it means that it has a high vitality. To increase the chances of success, young seedlings should be covered with fallen leaves and needles.
If the winter is snowy, its cover will insulate them by itself, and at the same time there will be normal ventilation, the plants will not rot. If the winter is snowless, you can additionally cover it with burlap. They shoot everything in the spring.
Further care for thuja for the first year or two is simple - you need to weed the ground near the tree in time, water it in a timely manner (1-2 once a week) and in the heat - spray, removing dust from the branches, sometimes apply a minimum amount of fertilizer for conifers trees.
