Despite the fact that there are many nice new varieties of apple trees, I still love the ones my father planted. And although these trees have already crossed the 30-year-old threshold, they bear fruit so that I don't know where to put the liquid, honey apples!

In principle, I do not use chemical yield stimulants - I love everything that is natural and harmless, so I just learned how to competently rejuvenate trees.

From personal experience, I recommend pruning in the spring, before the sap begins to flow.

The fact is that if the weather brings a surprise and the autumn is icy and damp, then the old tree may not have time to get stronger for wintering.

The procedure for rejuvenating the apple tree literally in a season is as follows:

1. First of all, sanitary pruning is necessary, that is, the removal of broken, frostbitten, dry shoots.

2. Closely intertwined branches are also subject to removal and those that are directed deep into the crown look down.

3. Next, you need to shorten the tree to 3.5 meters by cutting off the upper part of the trunk. Thus, the apple tree will be fully open to sunlight and will not waste vitality.

4. The next step is to trim the sides of the skeletal remaining branches to a maximum length of 2-2.5 meters.

5. To stimulate the growth and development of new shoots, it is necessary to sacrifice the fruiting old branches. You can find them out in spring by ringlets.

6. Slices with a diameter of more than 5 cm must be covered with garden varnish so that the apple tree does not run out of juice.

7. As soon as the abundant melting of snow begins, the stage of cleansing the trunk of old bark, or rather, its absolutely lifeless sections, begins. Thanks to this technique, the tree will begin to actively form young shoots. The affected areas need to be treated with a 5% solution of ferrous sulfate.

It is highly desirable that with this very serious pruning, no more than one third of the branches are removed from the apple tree.

If necessary, you can complete the pruning for the next year.

If you deprive a tree of half of its branches at a time, this will significantly increase the chances not of rejuvenation, but of its complete death.

I also want to note that the pruner and the saw should be not only sharp, but also clean - a solution of copper sulfate is suitable for disinfecting instruments.

And if the rejuvenating pruning went well, then by the middle of summer the tree will fully recover, heal wounds and be decorated with young strong twigs.
