Edible or blue honeysuckle is prized by gardeners for its early ripening period. The first harvest can be obtained at the beginning of June.

Honeysuckle bushes can be considered self-fertile, and to increase the yield, it is necessary to grow several varieties at the same time.

The plant is characterized by cross-pollination. Honeysuckle is pollinated by insects. From one bush, you can collect up to two kilograms of fruit.

How to choose the right seedling

The plant must be young and not exceed 150 cm in height. An adult plant does not take root well and the adaptation period lasts longer. Such bushes begin to bear fruit only after 2-3 years.

Honeysuckle needs cross-pollination. For successful cultivation, it is worth purchasing at least three varieties.

Some varieties of honeysuckle produce slightly bitter fruits. Such plants should be avoided.

Planting features

Shrubs are best placed in flat areas with good lighting. The plant is unpretentious to growing conditions, but it will not grow in areas that are too dry or waterlogged.

Most often, honeysuckle is planted in the fall, in the first half of October. In bushes, the process of growth and budding is completed in mid-summer, so the autumn transplant is considered the safest.

If you plant seedlings in the spring, then it is better to do this before the start of bud development. Late transplantation times lead to a low survival rate and disease.

The hole should have such a volume that the root collar is 5 cm below the surface. Humus, double superphosphate (100 g), potassium sulfate (30 g), wood ash (300 g) are added to the hole. A small mound is made in the center of the hole, a plant is set up, the roots are straightened, and covered with soil mixture.

The soil around the bush is compacted and watered with water at the rate of 10 liters per plant. The bush is mulched with humus, peat or dry soil. The seedling must be pruned. This will provoke a rapid growth of honeysuckle.

Honeysuckle care

Watering depends on climatic conditions, but I usually water three or four times a season with a bucket of water per bush. With a lack of moisture in the fruit, bitterness appears.

The bush is fed with organic and mineral fertilizers. In early spring, a tablespoon of urea is diluted in a bucket of water, and poured under a bush. Also at this time, 10 liters of rotted manure or humus are introduced under the plant. In autumn, 150 g of ash are poured under the roots.

After the bush turns 6-8 years old, I begin to make sanitary pruning. I only remove old and diseased shoots. You should not cut the tops of the shoots, since a large number of flower buds are formed there.

If pests attack the bush, then the plant can be treated with special preparations or a 10% solution of moonshine.
